Terrible--don't move in here!

Sorry in advance that this is so long. I am a current (but not for much longer thank goodness!) tenant here at the Hunnington. Don't move in here! They try to make you think you are getting something wonderful at first, but when they get your money and your signature on the lease paper, the service turns terrible from management (staff in office is still nice however--I want to clarify that before anything). We were new to Huntsville and were searching for a temporary place to live for a few months before we purchased a home. We signed a 6-month lease. The staff members that work with the public were incredibly nice to us. They showed us a "model unit" because they said the lower-level unit we would be looking at was in the middle of "renovations" (it was the only lower-level unit available to rent). We were fine with this. We looked at it and it looked wonderful. They told us the one we wanted was a partially upgraded and would look exactly like this "model unit" but with brown cabinets (instead of black/white) and white appliances (instead of black). No big deal, it was nice in general--color didn't matter to us. We still wanted to look at other apartments since we were new to the area. We left and looked around and didn't find anywhere else that offered a move-in special like The Hunnington ($99) or where the staff was as nice or where the interior was so nice. They also seemed to be very pet friendly compared to some of the other apartments. We went back and set up the lease to move in a couple of weeks later when they would be done with "renovations" to our new apartment.
THE BAD STUFF BEGINS--When we got there with our U-Haul, etc. at the planned time, they weren't at all ready for us. They had to change the locks and inside there were several things missing, such as blinds, a mirror, the door to close out the washer/dryer, etc. We traveled there from two hours away to move in. I had coordinated with them when we would be there and they said it would be ready as soon as we got there. Turns out, we had to wait about an hour for them to change the locks to the apartment before we could even begin.
We finally got the key and started moving stuff in--only to find out it looked TERRIBLE. What renovations'!'! The paint job was AWFUL. There was paint all over the cabinets, the toilets (which were stained and dirty by the way), the appliances, the counters, carpet, etc. Also, we specifically told them we wanted a NON-SMOKING unit. Guess what' The previous tenant was a smoker. It smelled (and still smells) like cigarette smoke. That smell just doesn't go away. There were holes all in the ceiling, and one section of the ceiling where it looks like it's about to cave in. The cabinets were falling apart--I keep getting splinters from them and they won't stay shut. The sink is so old I can't even put a Brita water filter on it. The dishwasher is falling apart. We were thinking, "This is supposed to be renovated''"
The night we moved in, it rained and there was a severe leak in the windows. There was water all over the place! We called but of course they couldn't get to us until the next day. To their credit, the did come and fix the leak.
We had to wait weeks before they got us a door to cover our washer/dryer area, and when they put it in, it was missing a doorknob. We finally got a mirror for the bathroom, and it was scratched up and in really bad condition.
They came to change out our blinds (which were broken when we moved in), but they just left the new blinds and didn't even bother to put them up--they are still in the original packaging to this day!
The tenant above us overflowed their toilet and it leaked into our bathroom--really badly. And it was gross obviously. They went to the apartment above and then came to look at ours. They said it need to dry and they would come back in a day to seal it so that couldn't happen again--we called and they never came back when they were supposed to.
Also, we have dogs, and they are supposed to have the pet stations (where they supply bags for pickup and a trash can for doggy waste). There haven't been doggy bags in there for 4 months AND for about two months they never even changed the trash bag. There were bags with doggy waste (that the tenants were having to supply since management wouldn't) overflowing for months. They finally changed it a little while back.
About a month ago, we got a notice on our door. Sometimes they have little activities, so I figured it was that. I opened it and it was a letter claiming that people have "seen" us letting our dogs use the bathroom on property without picking it up and that we would be charged $25 PER DROPPING or be evicted if we didn't stop. There is always poop ALL over the grounds, but they were blaming US. There were about 5 other dogs besides ours living in units in our building. Plus there are tons of others in the buildings right next to us. Why are they giving us this letter when we clean up our dogs' waste''' We are very confused as to why they put the blame on us. We have been continuing as usual to pick up after our dogs, and other people still are leaving their dogs' waste, but we haven't heard anything else yet. Hopefully they aren't going to try to pull that stunt again, or I don't know what we'll have to do.
I really don't recommend this place and I hope that you will stay away from it. It is one of those situations where from the outside it is super nice, but once you're in, it's awful. Also, the current manager will very quickly turn mean on you if you are discussing issues. She takes things very personally and will put blame on the tenant. I have been in sales for 10 years, and you should NEVER treat a customer/tenant in the way she will treat you. If they are wanting to keep that apartment complex alive, she is not the manager for them to have. They've also had a lot of management changes within the past year--that doesn't speak well of their choice of management or the complex itself. They keep the grounds up well (for the most part)and the office--if only they treated the inside of the apartments and the tenants that way.
