It has its ups and downs

I have lived here for over a year and have wanted to move for awhile. The first problem is the noise that I have gotten somewhat used to, but I will never live this close to the airport, interstate, or train tracks again. I understand that this is a city, but I have lived in bigger cities with a lot less noise. Sometimes my balcony doors shake because an airplane is flying so low.
The next thing is the apartment itself. It is spacious, but when we moved in we did not have a refrigerator. They managed to scramble one up for us quickly, but that was not exactly the welcoming I was hoping for. Also, our dishwasher was broken and instead of replacing it they fixed it temporarily. Now it leaks all over my kitchen floor so I have to mop up the extra water. It also doesn't get my dishes very clean even after I pre-wash them. The shower only had cold water and the oven would not come on. I flipped the breaker and still nothing happened, but when the maintenance man did it it worked. My oven cooks about 20 degrees hotter than a regular oven so anytime I bake I have to turn the temperature down and cook for less time. I learned my lesson about moving into an apartment with old appliances. I also bought a new washer and dryer and within the first three months the dryer broke. I called the store where I purchased the dryer and they sent a repair man. He told me it was something with the apartment's outlet hose. He said they needed to clean it. Whether this is true or not I do not know. I never told them about it, and my dryer works fine.
When I moved in the carpet was dirty. I ended up renting a rug cleaner to clean it myself. The apartment took off $50 from the next months rent. The carpet is coming up where the carpet meets the kitchen tile. There is a stain on the bedroom carpet.
Within the first few months both toilets started to overflow, and the balcony doors had to be fixed. The maintenance crew responded very quickly and have always been very polite. The only issue I have is when the light in the laundry area went out they refuse to fix it. They said that if it was the fluorescent light they would replace it, but I'm supposed to fix the other lights. I don't really understand why they would fix one kind of light and not the others.
I also had an infestation of spiders. They looked like brown recluses, but I never got too close so I can not really say. The spiders were in the bathroom and I think there was an infestation in the kitchen counter. There was a huge whole where the bar meets the counter where I think there was a nest. I also kept seeing garden roaches in the apartment and centipedes. Pest control came and put down some poison which took care of the problem with the spiders. The roaches and other critters went away when the weather turned cool. Now it is getting warm again and I am getting out before they come back. I do not want my dog to get bitten.
My electric bill is outrageous. I live alone and it has been over $100 some months. I do not leave lights on and I keep the thermostat at a constant temperature. I had to put a towel on my window sill to keep out the cold air because one day I noticed that the window does not meet the edge completely. There is a big gap at the corners. When the landscaping men come with their leaf blowers they blow wood chips into my room! I ended up having to vacuum wood chips from my carpet. I complained to the office, but nothing was ever done about it. In fact, my phone call was never returned. I could also feel cold air coming from around the doors. In the Summer, the air did not flow into the back room. The master bedroom would be hot and the other bedroom would be freezing. In the Winter, the kitchen would be hot and the rest of the apartment was freezing.
I was referred to this place by friends and they were supposed to get some sort of referral reward. They never got it and continued to call the apartment office. After awhile they could never get anyone to answer their phone calls so they gave up. I have heard that other people have had this issue.
I am so happy that the construction is over. The workers left all their stuff, including nails, on the ground. They were always outside my window and door. This made me very uncomfortable so I kept my blinds shut, but the blinds on the balcony doors kept falling off. I had a wind chime on my balcony and they ruined it. All the decoration on it fell off because someone had cut it. I also had a wreath on my door and they painted all over it. The apartment had sent out a notice saying that construction would be going on, but never said anything about everything being off of your doors and nothing hanging on your balcony. The construction was the worst of all of this. They were very loud workers and the apartment complex still looks ugly. They cut down most of the bushes and did not replant anything. So now it is April and it still looks like Winter around here.
I thought that since the apartment was by the interstate that everything would be so close, but it usually took me 20 minutes to get anywhere due to traffic or the road construction.
Do not forget to pay your rent or they will leave a notice on your door with the RENT LATE exposed for everyone to see. I never paid my rent late. The apartment looked at the wrong number on the check and credited a different apartment. This was taken care of very quickly.
For about the first 8 months of living here I was constantly getting notes on my door about not picking up dog poop. This was a little irking because I was picking up after my dog. They would write in the letters that they were not certain whose dogs were not being cleaned up after, but the notes did sound a little accusatory. Most of the time he would go across the parking lot in the woods. The pet fee is pretty high compared to other places. It felt like they did not want pets here, but then they built the dog park. I have never been to it because I do not know where it is. I do not even know if it is completed. I have not really heard anything about it. Most of the time I play with my dog right outside my door in the courtyard.
I have also had a little trouble with my mail. If you get a package they put a note in your mailbox, but there have been times where I did not get a note. I just had to keep checking with the office to make sure that my package was not lost in the mail.
There is plenty of parking, but the road in front of the apartment is horrible. There is a median in between the lanes. There were two little dirt paths to cross over, but one day there were spikes in the dirt. A couple of my friends almost ran over them. I do not know if this was the apartment or the city, but they could of put up a sign or something. After this they put up orange cones so it looks like a continuous construction site around here. Now when I pull our the parking lot I have to go half way down the road to where they have the one crossing then go back down to get to the main road. When you are in a hurry this is an inconvenience.
There was a shooting here and my neighbor's apartment was broken into. I'm happy I have my dog to protect me. I had one guy knock on my door one night asking for gas money. I live on the lower level and I had my balcony door open. I immediately locked it and kept a look out. The cops do patrol around here a lot which kind of makes me think that this is not such a safe place. The cops have spotlighted into my apartment, and I have seen a couple of cops get out of the car and start looking in the bushes. What they were looking for I will never know. All of these incidences have happened late at night.
About half way through the lease they changed to where a flat rate water fee would be included in the rent. They did this two weeks before Christmas. So my roommate was panicking about coming up with the money for the new deposit, the flat water fee, the water fee to the city, and paying for Christmas gifts. I went to the office to explain and they said that unless the city sends a notice to pay their bill to not worry about it. She did not pay the last city water bill and we never heard anything about it. Great advice.

I could have written this myself. The only other thing I want to add is that most of the construction workers did not speak English. When you asked them to GET OFF YOUR VEHICLE so you could leave they would all laugh and make comments to make you uncomfortable. The port a potty outside near the garages was disgusting! I had to have 2 tires repaired from running over nails in the parking lot left there by the workers. My child brought me a razor blade that was left in the yard. They left their lunch trash everywhere and the residents got nasty memos threatening to be charged is the staff had to clean up after US! I hate living here and will be moving asap. The office staff is RUDE and condescending. Every single time we get a memo about yet another 'change' there is a threat in there somewhere about what they will do to us if we don't comply. We are adults and as hard as it was to get in here for the background check, etc they should know they are dealing with adults. I also found out from a friend who inquired about an apartment here recently that the new renters' rent is going up well over $100 so dont be surprised if everyone else's does too,
