Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
My boyfriend lives at Mountain View, and recently, because of illness, I had to temporarily move in with him. I have also visited Mountain View many times over the past year that he has lived there. Here are my impressions:
Outwardly, Mountain View is a great apartment complex, which is why my boyfriend moved in. The apartments are newer, the grounds are nicely kept, the staff are friendly. He got a GREAT deal on a spacious 2 bed/ 2 bath apt (pretty much paying the same as one would for a one bed/one bath). If you first inclination is that this is too good to be true, believe your instincts! There is a reason why Mountain View is offering such good deals on these seemingly nice apartments. This reason is the first rule of real estate--location, location, location.
To get an idea of the neighborhood where Mountain View apartments is located, look up Ski Lodge apartments in Tuscaloosa and read those reviews. While my boyfriend knew that parts of the surrounding area were not the best neighborhood in Tuscaloosa, Mountain View itself seemed perfectly fine--at first.
After a few months, we started noticing some very undesirable things. First of all, if you stop by Mountain View in the middle of the day on a weekday, you will notice an unusually large number of cars parked in the complex for, say, 10:30 on a Tuesday morning, when you would think most people would be at work or something of that nature. There are usually a fair amount of adults (not students) just "hanging out" outside in the middle of the day. For example, there is one man who I have seen several times just hanging out near by boyfriends apartment in the middle of the day. He is never wearing a shirt, just shorts, and he, like the other people who are just hanging out, doesn't seem to have a real purpose. They always make me very uncomfortable.
The people "hanging out" gets even worse at night. The parking lot is frequently crowded with men just standing around their cars blasting music and seemingly doing nothing but hanging out in the parking lot.
I feel very unsafe walking to my car alone at night in this complex without being escorted by my boyfriend.
In addition, my boyfriend uses a wheelchair to get around, which makes access to a handicap parking spot absolutely necessary, because without access to a ramp, he can't get up on the sidewalk. Nine times out of ten, when he comes home, someone who does not have a handicap parking permit has parked in the spot, thus blocking access to the ramp, because they are too lazy to park just a few spots further away and walk to their apartments. This should tell you something about the character of many individuals who live here. My boyfriend has complained to management on several occasions, but the problem persists.
Lastly, this particular apartment has very noisy neighbors. My bf is on the first floor, and the people who live upstairs have a noisy toddler whose every pitter patter can be heard pounding through the floors. We also can always hear the music they blast (or the music being blasted by people hanging out in the parking lot), vacuum cleaners being run by the neighbors, etc.
So in short, though this complex may seem tempting based on the outwardly nice appearance of the apartments and the grounds, your neighbors will make you regret moving in, especially if you are a female living alone.
