Not the best in town, but maybe the best value

You get a lot of bang for your buck at Eagle Hill...my apartment was 960 square feet, and I only paid $600/month. I've recently moved to Houston, Texas and am now VERY much aware of how good a deal it was (you'd be lucky to find a place for $1 per square foot down here). So let me tell you a bit about it:

COMPLEX:

The apartments themselves were built on the Eagle Hill golf course, which provides a gorgeous environment and view. There are a LOT of units, between Eagle Hill and the slightly-newer-but-otherwise-identical Eagle Nest complex around the corner. I didn't have any problems finding a vacancy, getting the lease squared away, etc.

The apartments are on the edge of town, so they are fairly insulated from noise and traffic, but still provide very easy access to both I-430 and I-30. There is a grocery store a few blocks down Stagecoach Road, as well as plenty of gas stations and a couple of fast food places. For the full variety of food as well as a Wal-Mart Supercenter, Bryant (a suburb of Little Rock) is only 5-10 minutes down the road as well.

The apartments seem fairly secure, with a crazy-big fence around the entire apartment/golf course area and gates at the entrance to each set of apartments. I'd say the gates were only functional about 90% of the time, but hey, it is something. My only problem is that there was one code that was used by everyone to open the gates...no cards or phone entry, so anyone who knew the code could get in, whether they lived there or not. A combination of a card system with a phone dialer would have been better. The parking is well lit, as are most parts of the apartment buildings. I was a little concerned because if you drive a few blocks further down Baseline Road, you get to a part of town that...well, let's just say that I wouldn't want to go down there without packing some Kevlar. :) But I never noticed any problems around the apartments.

There is plenty of parking available, an aspect of the apartments I didn't fully appreciate until I moved to Houston, where parking is either expensive, distant, or non-existant.

The grounds are nice by virtue of the golf course, but the landscaping around the apartments is fairly ordinary. It does have a nice open feel to it that I enjoyed. There is a pool (although if you live in the Southern Hill Circle buildings, you have a short drive or a bit of a walk to get there) as well as basketball courts (I'm amazed how FEW apartments have these...I loved it). I got really lucky, in that my apartment was on the second floor on the golf course side, so I really had a nice view.

Each two bedroom unit has a nice-sized porch/balcony area, but it really isn't "yours" since they open onto the landing for the stairs. You aren't allowed to use your grill on the balconies, but there are plenty of public-use grills scattered around the complex.

INSIDE:

The apartments are large and simply decorated, with neutral colors for wall paint, carpets, tile, counters, etc. but I think that is a good thing...they don't impose any particular style on you. I loved having two full bathrooms...I could have guests stay in the second room and they were all set: no fighting over the bathroom in the morning! This setup would be great for having a roommate.

The apartments have alarms; when I moved in, they said they could activate it so that it just made a lot of noise if someone entered without a code, but to have the system dial the police would cost extra. I actually don't think they even offer the free option anymore.

All of the appliances were included (even full-sized washer/dryer) and they all worked very well. The heating and A/C worked WONDERFULLY...I only wish the A/C down here in Houston was as nice.

Maintenance-wise, I had one problem with the heater one time, but a maintenance guy was out to fix it 20 minutes after I reported it (!!!). I also had a golf ball hit the bedroom window and break the outer layer of glass. This was also taken care of very promptly. For those of you worried about golf balls: most of the apartments either don't face the golf course or are not likely targets for errant shots (unless a golfer is either deliberately aiming at it or is a REALLY bad shot!), so I wouldn't be too concerned about that. I never had any problems with pests, but they seem to spray fairly regularly in any case.

I didn't have any problems with noise, but I was living on the second floor with no one above me. It might be worse on the first floor.

For those of you who play golf, Eagle Hill is a semi-private course, but residents of the apartments get an "associate membership" that entitles you to unlimited golf on weekdays for half price. Not a bad deal. The course is fairly nice by Little Rock standards...it isn't Pleasant Valley or Chenal, but it beats Longhills, War Memorial, or Rebsamen Park.

So all in all, there is a lot to like about Eagle Hill and not much to complain about. It isn't luxury by any stetch, but you get nice big apartments for comparably little money.

It's really quite humorous when the employees try to comment on ratings and try to get you to disregard them. It's quite obvious, you know?
