A decent apartment floorplan ruined by excessive noise and comparatively high rent.

If you choose to live at Kachina Apartments, this is what you can expect:

1) Excessive noise from neighbors. I lived in both first- and top-floor apartments, and both suffered from thin walls/ceilings/floors. DO NOT rent a first-floor apartment. The floors creak unmercifully and you will hear every agonizing step from your neighbors above. Other noise, like conversation and stereos, is also clearly heard.

2) The one-bedroom apartment has a well-designed floorplan with plenty of closet space, including an entry coat closet and linen closet. Overall space is tight for a couple but OK for a single person. Unfortunately, the apartments have not been updated since being built in 1985 so you will deal with an older refrigerator, woodgrain-trimmed microwave and dishwasher, and a lack of ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom.

3) The management, while friendly and cooperative on first impression, is mainly concerned with squeezing out the most profit from an aging property. While living in a top-floor apartment, my bedroom ceiling leaked twice from rain, and I had to push the bounds of my legal rights just to get a few dollars in compensation for not being able to use my bedroom for two weeks due to repairs.

4) The maintenance staff did a satisfactory job on simple repairs. On more complex problems, like my hot water heater that would periodically turn scalding on its own, they would drag their feet. Only my letter writing campaign to the owner of Kachina Apartments convinced the maintenance/management staff that a new hot water heater was the solution.

5) As of November 2002 I paid $650.00 for a one-bedroom apartment. For just $25-50 more per month someone can live in a much newer apartment community with better amenities. Check around for the best deal.
