ruined my credit rating for no reason

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2001
When we left lakeview at ocotillo, we gave them all of our forwarding address information. Turns out they charged us a $20 maintenance charge. Whatever. We paid that bill within 10 days of receiving the letter. Couple years later I'm looking at my credit report--they reported it as seriously delinquint bad debt. I've talked to them, and they know we paid our bill on time, and they swear up and down that they never sent the bill to collections. But I'm here looking at the credit report, and they still haven't corrected the situation.
