Beware of Misleading Statements

I read several comments suggesting that staff members were misleading, if not dishonest. Please consider those comments before renting. Do not sign an extended lease agreement if you have ANY concern that you may be compelled to move or vacate the apartment. I signed a six-month lease agreement and office staff explained that I could break the lease if I was compelled to move. According to office staff, I would have to pay only the liquidated damages figure (one month's rent) and return any savings I received from their 6-month rental special.
Not true. They held me under the full lease agreement. They also disclosed (several months later) that they reserve the right to assess up to three month's rent as damages for breach. Those terms never expressly appeared in my lease agreement, but office staff explained that it was "office policy."
Office staff were generally friendly, but when my circumstances changed they became unjustly adversarial and confrontational. I spoke with several neighbors who voiced similar complaints. One individual lost his job and could no longer afford housing. The office staff enforced his lease agreement and filed suit when he failed to make rent (even though he had relinquished legal possession of the apartment). I note that my rental history was impeccable (every payment on time, no complaints, maintained apartment in excellent condition, etc.). When I asked for clarification concerning terms in my lease contract, I was directed to the Ocotillo Bay attorney.
Although I am sure many people had pleasant, hassle-free experiences with Ocotillo Bay, I would strongly discourage renting here when the potential for such treatment exists. There are several nearby alternatives that offer comparable housing but with amicable staff.
