I suppose I should have consulted with the owners of Aspen Shadows before my husband an I decided to make the VERY personal decision to have another child. Before I became pregnant, our stove and oven quit working to the point where you could not use them simultaneously. A maintenance person had been in our townhome several times to "fix" the stove, which did no good. He lied to the manager and said there was nothing wrong with it. After 4 months of calling the manager and a ruined Thanksgiving turkey (it had been thawed completely, but the oven did not bake it all the way), we got a new stove. I was a couple of months pregnant. Our lease was about to run out, but we had to sign a new one year lease JUST TO GET A STOVE. I guess it wasn't important for me to have COOKED food while I was carrying a life inside of me. After asking for a whole year for a new microwave that actually worked, we got one. Now we are gone, but they want to charge us for the last 2 months of a lease they forced us to sign, a lease we should not have been in anyway. We are also losing a $900 security deposit. During my last few weeks at A.S. I stepped on a nail (my doc gave me a tetanus shot as a precaution), broken glass, and a razor blade, and this was a few feet from my front door. My and my father-in-law's vehicles were sprayed with paint. We were not told about all of the "upgrades" to the complex, painting included. So neither I nor he had any idea that our vehicles should have been moved to avoid being painted by careless workers. The hired workers, probably undocumented, have been seen sleeping on the job and harassing women, to the point where they are afraid to go home. Right after my baby was born, the workers were on our roof, and I had just gotten out of the hospital. They were a few feet above our head, so we didn't get any sleep for 2 weeks. Nobody notified anyone of any roof repairs ahead of time, we just had to figure it out when shingles started dropping from the roof and debris flew at the front door, so nobody could safely get out. We received the notice at 8pm the first night that roof repairs were being done and that we should clean off our porches, because A.S was "not responsible for any damages". A lot of good that did after they began work. The smell from the paint that they never told us about made me very sick, and of course I couldn't just open a window to let the outside air in. In May of this year we went nearly a day without water since the water co. bailed on the job, and of course it was just in my building where there was no water. I had to go to Phoenix to stay with family and take my other child with me so we could bathe and so I could, God forbid, have water to cook with and drink while I was pregnant. Half of our windows never opened properly. The grounds were extremely dark at night so it wasn't safe to walk outside in case you might fall, and people sped through the parking lot without penalty, forcing you to run out of their way. The maintenance staff turnover is freakishly high. With the exception of the lying maintenance man, the other guys have been really sweet, and it's a shame that the owners don't pay them more. There are only 1-2 on staff at one time. Beware anyone who has mold problems: you will be asked to sign a mold addendum, which basically says that, you, not A.S. or its owners, are responsible for the problem. If you get sick from mold, they don't care. Also, watch for unexpected rent increases of $60 dollars with no notice; this is done supposedly so A.S. can be more "competitive" with other places in the area. If work in the parking area is being done, they want to force 50 cars into about 20 spaces, or you get towed. Don't live here. It's not worth it anymore, which is sad, since the homes are a good size and affordable for Flagstaff.
