Years at this apartment: 2004-01-01 - 2005-01-01
Let me just say that living here hasn't been as horrible as our previous apartment complex. I don't think anything will trump that.
The area of the complex that we live in is usually kept up pretty well.
Snow removal this winter was interesting. Halfway through the winter they finally decided to hire some temporary workers to help clear sidewalks and cars after the heavy snows. Before that, they expected their one maintenance man to clear the entire complex by himself! I usually took the opportunity to get some exercise and cleared the sidewalk in front of our building myself.
Our apartment is nice and don't really have any major complaints about it. The layout of the kitchen is very tight and cramped. There also isn't much closet space offered either. So, if you have a lot of things don't expect them to be hidden in this apartment. The bathtub is fiberglass and doesn't hold heat very well. In the winter, if you plan on taking a bath make it a quick one. The tubs are also very hard to keep clean because they're not porcelain.
Our water heater was broken for about a month which required several calls to emergency maintenance.
One of our major complaints is just a design issue. The apartments have terrible ventilation. Because the windows are all on one side of the apartment, there is no way to get a cross breeze on warm days. That makes the apartment very stuffy. Also we've had an issue with our next door neighbors cigarette smoke smell coming through the walls. We're not smokers so obviously the smell bothers us. The management told us there was nothing they could do about it because she has a right to smoke. Then they told us to put dryer sheets in with our air filter and that would cover the smell of smoke. Great...thanks for the help!
Noise hasn't been horrible...you definitely hear the traffic on the I-40 and the train horn blowing at all hours. But we got used to them.
In the year we've been living here, the office staff has changed about three times. It's a little hard to trust your management when it's always someone new. I think the complex could do much more to offer more ammenities to their residents. The price seems high for what they have to offer. We've been suggesting better lighting in the stairwells since we got here. It's very dark and women coming home by themselves late at night should be concerned.
All in all, Butterfield is not horrible but I know there is better out there.
