I should have listened to the negative reviews a year ago!!

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
It's ironic that I visted this website in the summer of 2003 and then decided to move into Lumberjack Hill, despite all the negative reviews. I've paid dearly for that decision, and I hope that I can help the rest of those seeking information on this apartment to see just how ridiculous this place is.
Fist of all, I'm not going to say that everything about this complex is horrible, because that would not be the case.
The interior of the apartments are not the worst in the world. I've lived in over 7 different apartments in my short lifetime and these definitely weren't the worst of the worst.
The truth is, the buildings are just fine, the grounds were relatively clean, and I didn't find that the quality of the construction was all that bad.
Now, Lumberjack Hill may have decent apartment buildings but they are sorely lacking when it comes to management.
I am extremely upset with the management for a number of reasons:
First of all,Lumberjack Hill has quite an odd system in place to deal with how utilities are paid for.
When you first move in, you are informed that that the utilties are already in the name of Lumberjack Hill and therefore always on. It is then the responsibility of you or one of your roommates to put the utilities into your name. If you do not put the utilities into your name, Lumberjack Hill will split the amount of the bill among the roommates and then charge EACH ROOMMATE an additional $25 for every bill that is not paid.
Even though I thought this was a weird system, I went ahead and put half the utilities in my name and my roommate at the time put the other half in his name.
In all other complexes I've lived in, there were no systems like this in place. If you wanted the utilities turned on you had to call up and put them in your name. If you didn't put them in your name..you didn't recieve utilities! This is the way it should work.
Lumberjack Hill, on ther hand, had decided to take advantage of this utility situation as a way of making money. Does Lumberjack Hill really need $25 per roommate to pay a $18 utilitiy bill' No. Since the roommates already have to pay the bill itself, that is already covered. Lumberjack goes one step further and charges another $25 each. That adds up to $100 profit for Lumberjack in a 4 bedroom apartment.
Now, why might I be rambling on about this ridiuclous system' Because is punishes the person who is responsible.
After about 9 months of living at Lumberjack Hill, I decided to move in with my girlfriend. I knew that I still had 3 more months left in my lease, so I continued to pay my monthly bill of $325.
All this time I was not living at Lumberjack Hill at all. I had left some of my belongings in the room but I was basically just paying to finish out the lease.
I decided that since I was no longer at Lumberjack, I had should no longer be responsible for utilities, so I told my roommates that I would no longer being paying for utilites.
I told the 2 remaining roommates that I would be taking the utilities out of my name and that one of them needed to put it in their names. They told me that it would not be a problem.
It definitely was a problem. They then dediced not to put the bill in either of their names and let Lumberjack Hill charge each each of us the bill plus $25 EACH!
I ran into one of my roommates after a month or so and realized they still hadn't put the utillities in their name. I told them that they would charge each of us for that and they responded that they would pay for my late charge since it was their fault.
Did they do this' No. This continued for the next 2 months until our leases expired. When I came back to the apartment to move my stuff out and saw all kinds of notices on the kitchen counter telling us we were being charged for the utilites.
My grand total for unpaid bills, carpet cleaning costs that I had nothing to do with, and all the $25 late charges is now $96 and that is after Lumberjack took all of my security deposit! Do you think I'm really ever going to get the money from these roommates. Nope. Long gone and Lumberjack could care less.
I WILL NOT pay this since it penalizes me for being the responsible party. I will not pay for someone else's negligence. There is no reason why I should have to continue to pay utilities when I told the utility companies that I wanted them shut off!
The system that Lumberjack Hill has set up is a joke and I'm currently checking into wheter or not this is even legal.
The story gets even better.. When I went to move my stuff out of the apartment and clean, I noticed that there were large grease stains all over the living room carpet. This stain was not there while I was living in the apartment so I can only assume it had something to do with a roommate's bike or other object. I wrote a note specically stating that Lumberjack should not charge me for the carpet stain since I had nothing to do with it. I cleaned the kitchen and living area as best I could, while the remaining roommates made no effort to do anything. I was assured that I would not have to worry about being billed for "little things" but my final bill from Lumberjack Hill shows that they charged $25 per roommate ro remove a carpet stain!! Before I cleaned the apartment, I told them I was weary of being charged for "little things" and the staff member even said, "Yeah, we've had problems with that in the past, but not anymore"
The fact that Lumberjack Hill even had "problems in the past" should be of cocern to anyone interested in this complex.
It's all about $$$ to the management here and they'll try to get in any way they can.
Avoid this place at all costs.
As a sidenote, I know that there are many reviewers who have an axe to grind. You will always find at least one negative review in even the best complex, but take a look at the general consensus. The average rating of Lumberjack Hill says it all.
Believe it. It's true. Avoid this place!!
