We moved into this complex because the price was right, but almost immediately regretted our decision. The units are small, they advertise a studio as a one-bedroom. Personally, I didn't mind the size so much as the fact that the windows were very small and didn't let in much light. The walls are very thin, so if your neighbors play music you'll just have to sing along. Management was a bit pushy when it came to some things. For instance, my wife's car had a flat tire, so I removed the tire and took it to be repaired. When I came back, they had put an enormous orange sticker on the window threatening to tow the vehicle because it was missing a wheel. This is in a neighborhood where half the homes have cars up on blocks in the front yard. The maintainance crew look as if they just got out of prison, or perhaps were recruited from the pool of homeless people that live around the adjacent bus station. These are not the kind of people you feel comfortable letting into your home.
One of the other reasons we moved in was the location. It is very close to the university. However, it is in what is perhaps the worst neighborhood in town. I called it the 'favela', because it resembles the mountainside shantytowns one sees in Brazil. The neighborhood is a low-income area, mainly because of its proximity to the train tracks. Anyone who is familiar with Flagstaff knows that a freight train passes through every 15 to 20 minutes with its horn blaring. Some of the houses in the neigborhood are literally feet from the tracks. The apartment complex is about 200 yards away, not nearly far enough to ensure a good night's sleep. With the window open, a passing train will make it hard to hear the person sitting next to you.
Personally, we never had anything stolen or vandalized, but the area seems to see its share of crime. On several occasions, complete strangers walked into our apartment without knocking. After chasing several unsavory characters out of the unit, I began to always lock our door.
The convenience of the location was not enough to keep us there. In fact, its proximity to the university was somewhat misleading. A very busy street separates the apartment complex from the campus; to reach the crosswalks one must walk at least a block in either direction, and then must cross two streets because the crosswalks are only on one side of the intersection. Jaywalking is fairly dangerous at certain times of day. When management began padlocking the only gate leading towards campus, this added two blocks to our walk. A minor annoyance, but enough to ensure that we moved out as soon as our lease expired.
