My wife and I are glad to have moved out of our apartment at Woodcrest! We were counting the days until our lease ended.
Upon moving in, the apartment was still not ready for us. The washer and dryer were in the middle of the living room and un-hooked up. There was trash left over from the maintenance crew. The shower was missing the temperature control knob & faucet. They had plenty of time to prepare the apartment for us since we moved in a day after we said that we would.
When the washer was hooked up by the maintenance lady, the drain for the washer was left unplugged and upon finishing our first load of laundry, soap water was dumped all over the floor and soaked into the new carpet. We called the after hours number at 7pm and told them that we had a flooded apartment and the unhelpful lady on the other end said rudely that this was not an emergency and she will take care of it the next morning. She also told us that we should not leave appliances unattended and that if we would have been supervising the washing machine we could have stopped it from flooding. We did our best to clean up the mess, however the water did soak into our floorboards and caused our bathroom door to not close properly. The next morning nothing happened. After frequent calling we had carpet cleaners over by the early afternoon.
In the cupboards below our sinks (Kitchen & Bathroom) we had mildew from leaking sinks. This took two weeks to get fixed but was fixed properly by professional carpenters.
The strike plate to our front door was half-heartedly repaired multiple times. I think a prior resident had had the door kicked in, and instead of replacing the frame they just attached a metal strike plate with two long wood screws to keep the door shut. Unfortunately after a couple of weeks, the screws would work themselves out and our door wouldn’t shut properly. Their fix every time was longer and bigger wood screws. This problem was never solved. The front door was also not hung properly and had a ¼ ” wide gap on the top near the hinge and a ¾” gap on top on the far side from the hinge. Instead of fixing the frame, they nailed a block of wood on the front of the door so that the cold winter draft wouldn’t enter the house.
The first major rain of monsoon season left us with a flooded front entrance way due to clogged drainage & poor design. They did come back through and unclog the drain, and they dug a trench right in front of our patio that became an eye-sore for the last 8 months that we lived there.
In the wintertime, the sidewalks were never cleared or salted. The stairway handrail that lead down the steps from the parking lot to my apartment rusted at its base and broke loose and was never replaced. And the parking lot was rarely plowed.
Our shower would not hold a constant temperature and would go from comfortable to scorching hot to artic cold all within a few seconds. My neighbors and I complained about this a number of times & they finally took care of the pluming problem right as we were moving out. The plumbers that they hired ended up being “peeping-toms” my wife came out of the shower one day with her towel on and the work crew stopped what they were doing and waked over to her bedroom window and started peering in. This complaint was given by a number of neighbors. However for the last three weeks that we lived there we had no running water from 9am – 5pm Monday-Friday.
The hot tub is a joke. You can only go there during office hours and it had water in it only ½ the time that I lived there.
The floorboards creaked loudly. Since we lived on the first floor we could hear every foot step our upstairs neighbor made. We thought there was a heavyset person living upstairs, but the guy ended up being only about 150 lbs.
The microwave is worthless; It didn’t fit our standard size dinner plate and didn’t rotate the plate around so hotspots would appear.
AND… THE DEPOSITS! OUCH! $400 to move in, ($200 max refundable not stated in lease) and an additional $400 for a pet ($200 Refundable as stated in lease). We left the place in immaculate shape. The don’t need to paint and the carpet looks brand new since we had it professionally cleaned twice during the one year we lived there. My wife and I spent hours leaving the place ----- and span and they are only going to give us half of what we paid them. Here’s the kicker and the reason why I am writing this. I was never one day late paying them rent, but they are 14 days late getting my deposit back to me. I was told I would have it in two weeks after move out. I don’t get any call backs and all I ever get from them is the run-around.
Here’s the pros about the apartment. Free heating. Free basic Cable TV. Lots of parking. Free cookies & candy in the rental office. Good location to Freeway, NAU & Walmart.
