*GREAT* place to live...just a bad neighborhood!

My husband and I rented a one-bedroom apartment here when we first moved to Phoenix after getting married. The office staff and management was great. There were NO bug problems (hard to find in the Valley)! We loved the floor plan, and everything seemed to be of very good quality. Never had a need for maintenance that I can recall in the 10 months we lived in that apartment. We did, however, have our car broken into in the parking lot (it was even parked in a space right in front of an apartment) and the stereo and CDs were stolen. Apparently this was a recurring problem with many of the residents. Up until the day we moved out, you could always spot cars with plastic taped up where their window had been busted out. The covered parking spaces are lighted, but the other spaces aren't lighted very well, making it pretty easy for low-life losers (and unfortunately there are plenty of them in this neighborhood) to steal your stuff. After 10 months, we transferred to a 2 bed/2 bath apartment and loved it, too. The transfer was easy and the staff was very helpful. In that apartment, we did eventually need some things replaced: the dishwasher, washing machine, kitchen faucet. All jobs were always done quickly and efficiently and the maintenance staff was always very friendly. The office staff was always hosting get-togethers for the residents, and they published and delivered to your door a monthly newsletter. They held contests for things such as holiday decorating of your patio, etc. and they held an early bird drawing each month for so much off your rent if you paid before the 1st. They were really involved with the residents. Granted, certain managers were better than others, and there did seem to be a high turnover of management and staff. For the most part, though, everyone was always very courteous and friendly. The pool was always clean, and so were the grounds for that matter. Staff always made sure that patios were kept clear and people didn't leave things hanging all over them, which was nice. In all, we really loved both of our apartments at Monterey Point. The rent for both was very reasonable, and we never had any trouble getting our deposits back. The only reason we left was to move to a better neigborhood. Unfortunately, that area isn't so good (refer to the car burglary issue above) and only seems to be getting worse. The apartment building next door had one of its buildings burnt down due to some idiot building a bomb. We felt the explosion all the way in our apartment, and we lived on the opposite side of the community. The police helicopters are constantly flying in circles overhead (that actually did irritate me after a while - it just kept getting worse), and sometimes they fly around announcing a suspect or missing child they're looking for. I tried walking to the Circle K at the end of the block several times, but that was a complete disaster. Cars would turn around and follow me, the drivers honking and yelling like a bunch of idiots - very embarrassing...and not too safe. I rarely felt safe when I was outside. As far as the noise, the walls are fairly thin and you could hear a lot of what was going on in other apartments, but that was never a big issue for us. Living in apartments is like that most places you go, so we didn't really feel like it was a big deal. But the cars are pretty noisy driving through the parking lot. Lots of "thump, thump" all night long - I guess it's not so bad if you don't have kids and like rap music (which I *do* have kids and *don't* like rap music). But I wouldn't have moved just for that reason. Too bad the neighborhood is so bad, because these apartments are really great. Built well and a good price. No bugs, great management. Good amenities. If you work a lot or don't mind the neighborhood (and have a good security system on your car), the area wouldn't be such a big deal. We still get homesick for our place at Monterey Point, and we haven't lived there for over a year.
