It's cheap.....but you get what you pay for

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
We found Terra Vida online and rented the place from just viewing pics on the internet (we were living on the East Coast). We contacted the Mesa Police Dept. before we signed papers. According to the police papers, it was a safe neighborhood.
When we came to sign the papers and get the keys, the apartment wasn't ready. So we came back 4 hours later (we had a dog, so we just drove around). The apt. smelled of urine. They told us that was because they steamed cleaned the apt. and forgot to open the windows. We later found out from a neighbor that the previous tenant had dogs and cats that would use the bathroom on the floor. Maintenance has been here every other month steam cleaning to get the smell gone.
The second day here, there were police, helicopters and SWAT team were here for one of my neighbors. Since then, the cops are regulars. They had a shooting this past Halloween, but I haven't heard any shots since then. But then again, with the train, who could hear anything. Actually, I am use to the train now. It use to wake me up every morning around 4 or 5.
I feel safe here since we own a huge dog. I do have a problem with people not picking up after their dogs. You can't walk on the grass without stepping in stuff. It smells really bad around here. Also, the trash can to throw away dog poop is right next to the picnic table and BBQ grills. Who wants to eat/sit next to that'' Maintenance is not good about emptying the trash bins, so the poop bags are placed on the ground. Also, my dog has been bitten twice. Once by a beagle and another my some kind of Shepard mix. Many of the dogs are friendly, but some are down right vicious.
Luckily, there are not too many kids in our section. However, there is one family with 4-5 kids that wreck havoc. They are not supervised. The 2 year-old kid has tried to walk into my apartment and tried to squeeze through the bars to the pool. The mother is always on the payphone or inside. I could go on about those poor kids.
The walls are thin. You can hear everything. Luckly, there is a new person living above us who is never home.
We have had a few things break (fridge, dishwasher). It is hard to get someone here. Maint. is so busy. Our current prob is the AC. It is leaking. We FINALLY got someone to come (he was very nice), but it is still leaking. He says there is nothing more he can do. We had to move our dining table against the wall and put a big pot in the middle of the floor. They just said deal with it. So, we are trying to get them to come resolve this.
Insulation is terrible. I keep the AC between 80-82 degrees and sit in the dark, and my electric bill is over $120/month!!
The office people are not helpful at all. When we moved in, the people we dealt with were very nice. The new people act like you are bothering them.
We have lived here for a year (I think we are going to continue to). We sign short leases. It is hard to find a place to allow all breeds and no weight restriction. We are not bothered by anyone. I don't think I have ever really talked to anyone. You say hi, and they ignore you. In our section, it's not that people aren't frienly, they just keep to themselves. We are lucky to live next to quiet people. Last year, it was so noisy from parties (from across the parking lot). You could hear their conversations. We are a young married couple, I don't want you to think we are some old people just nagging. I have lived in many different places, some better, some worse.
One last note: I would not live here if I din't have a big dog.
