Thin walls, but overall recommended, with nice features

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
UPDATED JULY 2005
I have been living at Adagio for just over two years. I wrote my review in early 2004, and wanted to update my review. I chose Adagio for several reasons. I got a great discount with my lease, and my 1-bedroom apartment is over 700 square foot, whereas most other places for about the same price only have 5-600 square feet 1-room apartments. The apartment layout is very unique, and it comes with a washer and dryer! On top of this, the bathroom has a large, roman-sized tub and the complex has a free, small-but-functional exercise facility. The Sun Foods supermarket on 35th and Greenway was within convenient walking distance, but it went out of business a few weeks after I moved in. However, there is a K-Mart, Blockbuster Video, restaurants, and several interesting small businesses within close walking distance to the property, as well as a bus stop right in front.
Parking: Assigned covered parking spaces are provided, one per apartment. Enclosed garages are also available. Visitors´ parking can become scarce at times, but not too inconvenient.
Noise: Adagio has been fairly quiet during my stay. However when it does get noisy, the management has been pretty responsive. I am very appreciative that Adagio has night patrol and that helps a lot. Management responds to noise complaints. In the past, the biggest headaches were due to students at a nearby mechanic school, but since the school's campus has moved, Adagio has become much quieter.
Grounds: The grounds are pretty well maintained and kept clean. I have seen more beautiful apartment grounds, but Adagio is sufficient and are generally kept clean.
Safety: During my stay, I have not heard of any problems with people being attacked and such. Adagio is a gated community, although it is pretty easy to sneak in and lots of people do so. Perhaps if the entrance and exit gates weren´t next to each other, it would be more difficult for cars to sneak in through the out-gate. But so far I have not seen any suspicious/dangerous people walking about the grounds. Some time ago Adagio was featured on the Channel 12 news because some woman had her rented garage broken into on three different occasions and her kid's dirtbike was stolen. I believe it was most likely committed by other residents. But with only a padlock on the garages, I'd say it was her fault for storing valuables in that garage, especially after the second and third thefts. They're only meant for keeping your car safe from the elements, not storage.
Perhaps my main complaint on safety is that the cameras are not used to their fullest efficiency.
Construction: I have some very mixed feelings of the construction at Adagio. First of all, the apartments are completely beautiful. Normally with other complexes, the apartments you actually get are not as nice as the model apartments they show you. This was not the case here. Aside from a few noticeable problems that maintenance quickly fixed, it seemed like the apartment had been previously unused. Adagio is a fairly newly-built complex, and my apartment is beautiful.
HOWEVER, it doesn´t seem like the buildings were constructed with the highest-quality materials. This seems to be a modern trend among newer buildings. The staircases shake a bit if you walk just a little too quickly. I can hear the floorboards creak as my neighbor above me walks. And worse yet, the walls are thin. If people are speaking with raised voices next door, you are probably sure to hear it. I once had a problem with a neighbor having frequent noisy sex at 3am, but the management came down on her quickly and soon she was gone.
So, the construction and design of Adagio is perhaps the most attractive feature to me, and yet this is probably my biggest complaint.
Maintenance: The maintenance guys are great and I appreciate their work. They are quick to respond too. They repaired a leaking pipe that funneled the humidity from the washer and dryer to the outside, and they replaced the damaged sheetrock which had been dripping onto the floor. They also replaced the garbage disposal motor after it broke.
Staff: I enjoy the office staff at Adagio a lot. They are really nice people and know me by name, and I never feel like they do not care about my happiness and satisfaction as a tenant. I know a lot of apartment managers look the other way to complaints about noisy tenants as long as they pay their rent on time, but this is not so with Adagio. One thing I want to address is the negative reviews made in the fall of 2004. In the summer of 2004, the old managers, Christine and Toni, moved on to manage the Villas on Bell (very nice managers, and I've heard that the Villas are a great place to live too, however a bit more expensive). For several months after that, there were some inept managers and I felt very uncomfortable renewing my lease at that time. I had plenty of issues with them. However, the current managers, Linda and Jennifer, came in at the end of the year and they are very pleasant and professional.
Also, I disagree with the review that said that the management offers no benefits to those renewing their leases. As of June I'm actually paying about $15 less per month after renewing my lease last April, plus they gave me a $50 gift card to Best Buy. If I had chosen to renew for a full year, I would've received a bigger gift certificate.
So despite some flaws, Adagio is probably one of the better apartment complexes in the Northwest Valley. I am new to apartment living in this country, so I imagine that the few problems I have with the apartment (lack of sound insulation, etc) are typical. The conveniences like a built-in washer and dryer do make up for that, and the apartments really are beautiful. I have met several friendly people who live at Adagio, and overall the tenants seem decent enough. I am planning to extend my lease after my discount 12-month lease expires, and I would recommend Adagio as an overall nice place to live.
