Decent, but you can get better for the money

My wife and I lived at The Scottsdale for 9 months. We chose it because it was relatively close to ASU, but didn't have all the students that Tempe apartments have. We enjoyed the apartment overall, but decided not to renew our lease.
Pros: -It was quiet. I don't think we ever heard any noise through the walls from our neighbors. -The grounds are clean and well kept. The entire complex is well shaded. -Great freeway access. 20 minutes to downtown Phoenix, 10 to the airport.
Cons: -Terrible pigeon problem. We were constantly cleaning pigeon crap off our deck. They soon began to nest and we never even used the balcony because it was so disgusting. We called the office to tell them about it and they said that they would remove the nest, but that all apartments have pigeon problems and there's not anything they could do about it. We eventually just bought some netting and screened off our balcony till the pigeons decided to move on to somebody else's balcony. -Office staff is condescending and not helpful. No matter how smart you are, the office staff thinks they're smarter. They always talk down to you, whether you call with a question about your lease, or a maintenance request. We had this terrible smell coming from below our sink. You could smell it as soon as you went in the house. We were embarrased to have company over because of it. Anyway, when we told the office about it, they refused to do anything about it and told us we had some rotten food in our fridge or something. -Bad neighborhood. Drive around a little bit. You're surrounded by a liquor store (I know, what apartment's not), and a 7-11. I wouldn't want to be outside at night. Our car was broken into and we were always scared that someone would break into our place when we went on vacations. Don't believe them if they tell you it's gated. There's only 1 gate in the whole place, and I never saw it closed. -It's expensive. We paid something like $750 for a 1 bedroom with a loft. We just moved to Mesa and got a similar apartment without the loft for $475 (and they pay our water). Beware, that you're paying for that Scottsdale zip code, even though you're living in the ghetto. You could save at least $200 a month if you lived in Mesa (seems like the cheapest city to rent in in the East valley). -Parking is terrible. They only have about 5 spots in the entire complex for 2nd cars, and they let people leave their broken down cars there.
