Decaying body points to homicide
Michael Ferraresi The Arizona Republic Nov. 16, 2006 03:48 PM
SCOTTSDALE - The decaying body of a woman uncovered from a south Scottsdale apartment points to signs of foul play, police said Thursday.
Investigators believe "strong evidence" discovered inside the apartment suggests the woman had been decomposing since late October.
A maintenance worker called police Wednesday after finding the unidentified victim's corpse in a unit at Sycamore Creek Apartments, just west of Scottsdale and Thomas roads, after neighbors complained about the stench.
Scottsdale detectives discovered a small fire had been contained inside the apartment, though it was unclear if the victim died because of the fire, Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said.
Sycamore Creek management told police they noted the smell of smoke coming from the apartment in late October, but did not call the police or fire department, Clark said.
Sycamore Creek management refused comment.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office is performing an autopsy on the victim, who could not be immediately identified due to the decomposition of the remains.
"The evidence on the body is the strongest evidence," Clark said. "Depending on the manner of death, it can badly deteriorate over time."
"Most of the investigation hinges on the medical examiner's report."
