Relatively good for the money

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
On the bright side, Desert Palm Village is very close to ASU, which helps me as a college student. The fitness centers are really nice with the usual workout equipment and a sauna and hot tub. The apartments are fairly spacious - they were the biggest we found for the same price when looking last year. I wish that wouldn't have played into my decision so much though. The neighbors are great, generally a mixed group of college students and young adults with kids. The maintenance guys are really nice as well, despite all the plumbing problems they've had to deal with. Our apartment flooded 5 or 6 times throughout the last year. The immediate neighborhood, specifically the two apartment complexes to the west before Rural, isn't the safest, and there have been a couple of major burglaries and a stabbing over there in the last 6 months.
Because of the terrible housing market the last couple of years, every available housing option has seen an increase in monthly rent and utilities. For a 9 month lease, rent is $816/month for a 2-bed/2-bath apartment. That does not include any of the utilities. Electric will run you $180/mo. in the summer but only around $30/mo. in the winter. DirecTV, the only option for cable, offers crappy packages, starting at $55/mo. which includes about 100 home-shopping channels along with the 9 or so my roommate and I watch. We just decided to disconnect our cable because the deal sucks so much. Consolidated Smart Systems, based out of California, provides the internet, which also rips us off for about $40/mo. The service always cuts out whenever there's a storm between here and CA. The girls who work in the main office are generally unhelpful and not hard workers. I went in to say that there was no way to change the televisions in the fitness center, and one of them said they didn't have a remote and that it had been a problem for awhile. Well what are you doing to fix the problem'! The same thing happened when the water dispensing machine broke - I went in to tell them, and the girl said, "Yeah I think there's a number on it. You can call that." Why don't you call it'!
Overall, compared to friends' places, Desert Palm Village is really average to poor in the service and quality of the apartments, but it's one of the best bargains around. If it weren't for the rest of the market being expensive, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm freaking astounded that upwards of $950 a month is cheap for a 2-bed/2-bath though...
