Getting Better'

I originally posted this message nearly one year ago. There has been some improvement, but not in areas most critical to me. At the moment, there is an issue with the hot water. It is not that it is nonexistent, it is the quantity that is a problem. If you want a hot shower, you'll have very little water pressure. To have normal water pressure, you must turn on a little bit of the cold water, this drops the temp way down, but at least the water is not frigid, eh' The office staff says nothing is wrong with the hot water. I think it is pure apathy on their part. Perhaps they did not feel it was worth writing a work order unless I had absolutely no hot water at all. The thing is, it is not just my apartment, it is everyone in my building. Obviously if the boiler water is heated to a bare minimum, they save money. Less money spent on the chillers for A/C and boilers for heat/hot water=more profit for the company.
The construction continues...this morning a crew was outside before 7am making an insane amount of noise, it was not just the necessary noise of demolishing a nearby apartment, but their loud banter back and forth, much of it unrelated to the work at hand, some of it highly inappropriate. Who has the management hired to do this work' Guess they don't care, just hire whoever is cheapest. Cheapest labor higher rent=more money for the rental company, the thing that matters most to management. The A/C this past summer never got my apartment below 82 degrees during the day. Staff said I should be grateful since it was really hot outside. Tell my electronics they should be grateful. I had to run extra fans to try to keep computers and other electronic devices from overheating. The head of maintenance is still a complete idiot. Not like I thought he would suddenly grow a brain, but wisdom can come with age, no' Seems he employs some qualified, even superior maintenance staff, but has trouble doing the work himself. Completely incompetent and complains if he himself has to go do the work of his men or be on call at night. This guy has a gigantic mouth and can be inappropriate. Will not miss this crerpy, unprofessional waste of fresh air.
On a positive note, they are now fixing laundry room vandalism in a more timely fashion. Doesn't look quite as run down as it used to. The new A/C in the laundry was a definite plus this summer, I'll miss it when I'm gone. Would seem they still haven't caught the pervert who has been touching himself and female tenant's panties in the laundry at night, but at least the police are trying to resolve the issue. They added a bunch of covered parking on the property. That is a good thing, just seems they didn't finish the job. There are sections on the property that appear to be without these structures. Did they simply run out of materials' Anyway, if you want to rent here and really want nearby covered parking, be picky about choosing the location. The grounds do look nice, overall, but I wish the office would address the dumpster diving issue. This sometimes goes on during the daytime when staff are present, yet I don't see anyone stop to investigate. These divers tend to make a complete mess and should not be allowed on the property at all. Pest control is good, no bugs to speak of here. Outstanding workout facility, will miss this greatly. Pools seem cleaner than ever before, doubt the health dept is still issuing violations.
Good luck!
Posted in January 2008. -- This used to be a nice place, but things have changed. If you re considering moving here, you may want to consider the following: They're updating the property, but in the interim, we're living in a construction zone. Constant noise beginning as early as 6:45 every day of the week, except for Sundays. Last Saturday, nobody slept past 7am anywhere around my building. This renovation project is long term, so no rest for the wicked. What comes with updating the apartments' You guessed it, they re charging higher rent, much higher rent. For what' It's all superficial improvements, plus they're reducing storage space. For example, kitchen cabinet space is minimal, yet with the renovation, they've removed some of the upper cabinets, something that is already minimal. They say they did this to make the apartment more "open" but what matters most here' A more open looking kitchen/living area or a place to put your dishes' Cabinets look nice, but they're cheap quality, just like some of the other materials used for the renovation. They put in new windows, helps shut out the noise, yet all I hear from office staff is about how nice they look. It s all about looks, goes with the name change to Scottsdale Gateway.
More and more, maintenance requests are ignored. Tenants sometimes have to make multiple inquiries to get action. It's not just trivial maintenance requests being ignored, but things like no hot water, no heat, no a/c last summer, pipes leaking, etc. Whether it s the office staff who fail to give the requests to the maintenance staff or the maintenance staff is dropping the ball, who knows' The head of maintenance leaves much to be desired, he s known for ignoring message after message personally delivered by tenants. Can't blame this neglect on the office staff. As for the rest of the maintenance crew, they re mostly okay, some are outstanding. There's no washer/dryer in the majority of apartments, so you have to walk some distance and go up/down stairs to do your laundry at their facilities, a facilities that are usually filthy. Laundry related garbage on the floors, huge cockroaches and even vandalism create an unsightly environment. Yes, it's the tenants who create the mess, but seems like someone could clean more often, maybe do some more pest control. That should tell you something about the people who are moving in here lately, they don't respect the property. On a positive note, they've just put in vents for a/c in the laundry facility, this will help alleviate the humid, hot hot heat during summer. Speaking of air conditioning, there s no central air or heat. There s a chiller/boiler system. Management decides when you should have air and when you can have heat. I recommend getting a space heater for winter. As for a/c outages in the summer, you can always go cool off in the pool or take a cold shower. Besides, you may only have cold water. Even if the a/c is working, it ll only get so cool in your apartment. If you like your indoor temp under 80 degrees during the hot months, you re probably going to feel too warm. My apartment s temp hovered around 82-84 most of the summer. Doesn t bother me so much, but it did bother a house guest who was staying for a few days, so we got her a hotel room. The construction of the buildings is such that noise from neighbors (through walls) is minimal, although people blasting music out windows and/or cars (especially late at night) is an issue, depending on where you live on the property. Overall, it is really not worth the rent. Too many problems with a/c, heat, hot water, having any water at all, power outages, noise, car break-ins, etc., etc., etc. But if you re looking for the Scottsdale name and the superficiality that goes along with it, Scottsdale Gateway is for you. Should say that the manager is nice and knows what he s doing, just not sure he knows what his people are doing or not doing, but at least he s a caring person. Don't take my word on any of this, walk around the property and stop tenants, ask them how long they've lived here and what they think of the place. For about the same rent, you can go to a much nicer, new place just down the street, with washer/dryer in unit and more space. Less trouble in a new construction. Good luck!

I've been here six years now and am continually disappointed by this place. The company that owns it (based on some other planet somewhere) is upgrading the interiors while the place as a whole falls further and further into disrepair.
Latest example: one of the biggest reasons I moved here is because I like to swim laps every week and the "heated pool" used to be great. It hasn't been heated for over a year now. The office people are very nice and very good at saying they're "working on it" but here's the bottom line: it needs a new heater and HQ won't pay for a new one since the latest one conked out. The reality is lap swimming here is over, period.
That's pretty much the way it works here: amenities are there for sales purposes, just don't count on them actually working. If you complain, expect the office people to be very nice at telling you indefinitely it's "being worked on" and forget about actually using them. Keep that in mind when you tour their new gym.
I commented earlier on the poor maintenance of the grounds. Here's an update: one of the many trees dying from lack of water dropped a huge branch that smashed the windows of three cars parked beneath it. My neighbor complained to me that one of her friends car's was damaged and the company refused to pay. A few days later another dead tree blew down and smashed the roof right outside my apartment.

i live here, and scottsdale gateway is great. I have been here for 2 years and the office staff is wonderful and they really did a great job when the monsoon hit of cleaning up the property. As far as any issues that me or my neighbors we all feel the same. This is a great location and for the most part, nothing never really happens here that is too bad. There is really no crime here. It is pretty calm and i definitely feel safe walking to the store or Starbucks on the corner. I think there are a lot of people that exagerate just to be mean. THe good definitely weighs out the bad. THis is apartment living, and if you owned your own home you would have to pay for your own repairs and so forth. I love it here and my neighbors are great and I love the easy public transportation that is offered in this area.

In reference to the 10/21/08 posting by Anonymous, I must respond. My posting is not only 100% truthful, many of my statements can be proven through documentation. Please note that I also made some positive statements, so there's no grudge here. It is dishonest and irresponsible for you to say there is no crime here. Didn't you just recently get the notice on your door stating there's been a man outside of our laundry facilities at night engaging in self-sexual acts? Do you never look at the number and nature of the police calls here? Maybe you live with your head in the clouds, but some of us know what's going on, some of us actually educate ourselves and live in the real world. Try checking out the City of Tempe's website to see crime stats/reports. If I owned my own home, I could arrange for water leaks and no A/C or no hot water to be fixed expeditiously. Here at Scottsdale Gateway, you're at the mercy of others. Do you not understand that part of your over-inflated rent goes to paying for repairs? Repairs have sometimes take more than a week, even such things as A/C problems during the summer. Is that acceptable to you? I too, like the area and do not want to move, but the huge increase in rent just to make things cosmetically more appealing doesn't resolve the chronic plumbing and A/C issues that this remodel did not address. It's all about profit, not people at this community. I have to wonder if you're a staff member in the office or a friend of someone who works here. Otherwise, your assessment of this property may be based on having extraordinarily good luck so far. Wait until you have no hot water or A/C for days at a time, then we'll see what you think.

To respond to Audiophile comments: Whoever this person is, is totally correct. I have lived here for over a year and tonight was my first personal run in with the man engaging in self-sexual acts with my belongings no less, I have had all of my underwear stolen, but I haven't actually caught the guy until tonight! I love my apartment, I love the staff. I of course am in a remodeled apartment and yes the noise during construction was annoying, but I love my apartment. As a female who lives by herself, I will tell you the only reason I am not renewing my lease is because of the creapy little man that was doing "acts" to himself with my underwear. I must say the Tempe police not only responded quickly but also seemed disapointed because they have been looking for this perve for over a year. He is about 5.4 - 5.6 small build, hispanic, always wears a cap. He was a wearing a hooded sweatshirt and my underwear this evening. He is lucky I was totally freaked out by his actions to call 911 instead of kicking him. I will tell you that from what I learned tonight SG is the only complex in the area they have been getting calls about his guy from. The management does know and does try to tell the residents what is going on, but unless some staff wants to hang out in the laundry rooms at night nothing is going to happen. Oh, there is a coin laundry mat down the street that is not only cheaper, but takes only about 45 mintues instead of 2 hours!

in response to 10/21/08 and 10/28/08 and 11/24/08. I too am a female that lives alone here. Maybe i am lucky about the maintenance issues in my apartment. As for the panty person gratifying himself, he was finally caught. I too was a victim of this weirdo and as the office staff told me the more of us who have been victimized the better to have more patrol to catch him. When in speaking to the manager, they all wanted him caught. This person who was caught didnt even live here. He lived in Central Phoenix!! How random. The good thing is that he is caught. I have become friendly with the staff because as being someone who moved to AZ and not knowing anyone, its nice to know that the office staff cares. Its not just fluff to make me feel better. Yes i have done my homework and have been to tempe.gov and the crime in this general area is far less than then adjacent neighborhoods. This not a perfect world. I always have hot water and the worst is that the landscapers work on my day off but in my perfect world of maybe soon owning my own home is that i would schedule them on my day off. I do agree the laundry mat is cheaper!!!
