The fun continues at the old "Foxhole". Sunday night someone's truck caught fire in the parking lot. Fortunately, the police called the fire department before other cars burned to the ground. Oh yeah, the police spotted the fire because they were investigating a car breakin. Don't bother to call the office if your vehicle is stolen or vandalized. They will tell you it is not their problem.
How about installing a few video cameras since you won't hine a rent-a-cop.

billyboomer: I think you have a few misconceptions about how the world of renting works. It is not like renting a hotel room, it more like agreeing to be part of a renter's association. This means that you share in much of the responsibility at an apartment property. If a truck catches fire in an apartment parking lot after business hours, it IS the responsibility of residents to contact the fire department. Same goes for any crimes occurring after business hours - residents must remain aware. It is not the rental management's problem if your car is stolen or vandalized since they do not own your car. That is between you and your insurance company and the local police. Installing video cameras might infringe on the rights of other tenants. Maybe they don't want to be watched by Big Brother at their homes.
From reading these reviews I often run across scenarios where there is a total misconception by the renter where exactly the responsibility falls. The solution is to READ THE LEASE that they signed. This will give a much clearer picture of where the legal responsibility falls in most situations and renters would be better informed if they did so. Until then many of the reviews on this site are just complaints about situations that could have been avoided if the renter had been pro-active and better informed.

I think it is fair to report safety issues related to a specific property. Management makes a choice to promote security or ignore the issue. Scottsdale Gateway appears to ignore the issue.

They used to have a security guy that would bicycle thru the property at night. However, I haven't seen him in months. My car was broken into here the same night as two others, and my neighbor had all of the tires stolen off of his Escalade. Not the safest environment!

billyboomer: i agree with you completely. although the privacy of the tenant is important, it is just as important to ensure that the tenants feel a sense of security. something like cameras at the entrance, around the parking lot, and places like a tot lot would make people more aware that they are a.)they can feel safe especially if the video is being used properly and b.)hopefully make people who are breaking the law and stealing aware that they're being watched and can/will be prosecuted. safety seems to be an issue my husband and i are really concerned about especially when we have a child and possibly one on the way. reading the ratings posted about the apartments we liked made us feel very discouraged because of comments like yours. we both appreciate what you have to say but then we're left to wonder where can we go that is safe not just for us but our kids? where can we live where we don't have to worry about appliances not working, horrible living conditions, and bug infestations?
teeewalk: i understand your view as well, but renting does not mean i should have to sacrifice my sense of security nor should i have to feel like i have to settle for less because of the terms and rules of the "renting world." with all that said, any suggestions or questions we need to be asking at this point? we're sort of at a dead end.
