Not worth it.

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2007

We lived at the University Crossroads apartments from June 2006-May 2007. Living there was both good and bad at the same time. These are just some general overview things about the complex that seem particulary necessary to those considering this apartment complex. In an attempt to be fair about the complex, here are some pros and cons just about the singular experience of their apartments.

Pros: The complex is conviently located near ASU for students. For the area, it is relatively cheap with all utilities included. The gas stoves are nice for those with culinary interests. The bedrooms are big. There is lots of storage space in the apartments. The pool is nice and the maintenance man is wonderful. The property is usually clean. The complex is on par with most complexes in the area on noise; quiet-ish in the day, loud-ish on weekends.

Cons: Carpet is very old. Our carpet was stained when we moved in, and we got charged for it, regardless of the fact that our inspection form mentioned is less-than-desirable qualities. The cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms are both cheap and ugly, but also very difficult to clean. The paint on them (the same awful orange of the complex) collects normal kitchen mess with a vengence. We recommend purchasing shelf liners for them. Apartments in the back block can hear the sounds of Dos Gringos at all hours of the night. The pipes are loud--whenever our neighbors would shower or brush their teeth, we were very much aware of it. It often woke us up in the early hours. The apartments seem to have been poorly kept over the years; ours was marked all over with repaired fist holes through doors and walls. The power went out about three times during the summer that we lived there, and the water was out three times through out the year. The office on site is now closed and moved over to the near by Carriage House apartments. This move is very inconvient due to the fact that the laundry machines only take electronic credit cards and the machine to add credit is locked up in that closed office. Traffic is also bad in the area, due to the light rail construction.

We feel the management deserves its own special commentary. When we went through the paperwork the head manager seemed very attentative and interested in helping us make this move. The assistant manager came off as pleasant and helpful. Our first impressions therefore were very positive about the complex. However, after a few weeks or so, the head manager left and was replaced with the current head manager, a rather short blonde with an unpleasant personal. After living there for three months, the management suddenly became very totalitarian, doing monthly inspections of individual apartments. They were supposed to be random, but we were searched every time, each time passing completely due to our cleanly nature. While these searchs obviously did not affect us because we were clean, it was rather invasive to our privacy. Otherwise, the management pretty much ignores the tenants if they can, except for the recent change of issuing statements of broad changes to controlling policies with threats for these violations. Some of these changes made sense, yet the fines issued with them were rather insane, for example, if they found a single cigarette butt in front of your apartment, you would be fined $50, regardless of the fact that you and your guests never smoked, it could be a random butt from anyone. They also starting selling parking passes to non-residents for around $100 during the school year. This made parking extremely hard during the day because all the close spots were always filled up with non-resident ASU student cars. This move was particulary irksome and shows the extent of the management greed at the cost of the residents. Our closing out of the apartment was an extremely unpleasant experience; the head manager refused to listen to us and essentially accused us of lying. Our apartment was extremely clean and in much better condition than we'd received it, as we'd spent time repairing things and yet she was dismissive and rude about the condition. Had we met her during the initial rental proceedings, it would have been highly unlikely that we would have selected this apartment complex.

We would not recommend living at University Crossroads. There are better complexes in the area and spending a little extra would be worth it. In hindsight's 20/20 vision, University Crossroads should have been our very last choice.
