I've lived here for a little over a year now, and am planning to move when my lease expires. My gripe is more for the safety of my dog, and the jumps in the amount the rent increases annually.
I picked this apartment based on the appearance of being dog friendly. They do have bags around the ground so you can clean up after your pets, but that does not make up for the number of unleashed dogs on the grounds. I keep my dog on a leash, but I find there are others here who do not. My dog as been bitten by an unleashed dog, so I tend to take him on walks outside of the apartment complex. If you have dogs be forewarned.
I also had a rental increase of about $40 for a 1 bedroom apartment, and that's after negotiation. So beware of the deals. They get you in really cheap, but the increase will knock you off your feet.
As far as the safety goes, the gates only keep cars out. I wasn't concerned about it until I heard what I thought was firecrackers, only to find out there was an incident that required 3 police cars and an ambulance. I'm not saying it's not safe, but if you are looking for an apartment that has gates to keep people out these don't.
With all of the negative, I feel I have to mention some positives. When I had to have things fixed, they did come and fix them with in 2 days. So all in all the customer service was good.
I leave it in your hands to decide what you think is more important to you.

As a resident here I have to disagree with your "dog problem". Luckily I am always home and have a dog which I walk often. My dog gets along great with all the other dogs and I know if only one dog I have seen off of his lease and that is Eddie who would never hurt a fly. I don't know of a single mean dog that would hurt another and I have been here a while. And about the gate comment... just a little information, the gates are not built to keep people out they are built to control the traffic. You will find violence anywhere and being that I live at Edgewood I would have to say I feel very safe. That would probably be why you can't say its not safe. I dont mean to come of as rude I just don't see how people can expect so much out of something. Every apartment community has rent increases, its called 'the economy' especially if you signed a one year lease. The price of one thing is always different the next year. There is so much more positive things to say about Edgewood besides the wonderful service from maintance, the ladies in the office are sweet and they do care about your situtation but it is out of their control. The residents here are all and all very nice and welcoming and you have everything you need located close. I hope you didn't go to a different complex expecting this not to be the same.
