They pay more attention to the grass than the tenants!

The management at Hilands is awfull! I had to hire the Arizona Tenant Advocates to come in and help me out of this hell! They came up with a list of 307 things that Hilands has violated in means of common areas, apartment maintenance, and the lease.
First: They hired subcontractors to replace all the pipes in everyone's apartment which I unuderstood was preventative maintenance but a HUGE inconveneience considering I had to empty my kitchen and bathroom and make sure that my personal belongings and valuables were not in harms way. I come home to gigantic holes all over my apartment, drywall dust on my brand new couch, and everything in my room piled on my bed including a $1000 peice of valuable equipment, irreplaceable artwork and family heirlooms. I complained and all they gave me as compensation was a professional cleaning and they didn't even clean my bathroom floor.
Second: My vehicle was stolen from the parking lot. There was insufficient overhead lighting in the parking areas which is not safe. When I told the management they seemed completely unconcerned about the fact that my vehicle was stolen from their property.
Third: Not long after my vehicle was stolen I got a notice on my door that there was a "suspicious looking male seen peering through people's windows" and that I should review the "safety guidelines" and keep my windows shut. NOT COOL! I suggested to the "assistant manager" who looked maybe 20 years old that they might think about hiring a courtesy patrol for the residents especially since my car was stolen and now I do not feel safe and she told me that the courtesy partol would be a liabilty. Nevermind the 900 other tenants because the guy that patrols the complex at night keeping the peeping tom's and car theives out is more of a liabilty.
Last but certainly not least: They spend more money on landscaping to make the place look all plush and pretty but not nearly enough on extermination and apartment maintenance. My washing machine has been broken since I moved in and they only ever come out to make it work temporarily. I suggested maybe they fix it right and they looked at me like I was stupid. AND! There's a roach and scorpion infestation. I had to send a freind to the hospital because she was stung by a scorpion in my living room.
They don't care. They flat out told me "Your car getting stolen is not my problem. Maybe you should have had renter's insurance. And the scorpions are not my problem either, there's nothing we can do about that."
There are so many things I would like to say to them but I would rather not stoop to their level.
Do NOT MOVE INTO THE HILANDS! Just because the grass is pretty doesn't mean that living there will be!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with this person, I have had the same problems. Although my car isnt worth steeling, i have had a HUGE roach in my living room, I wouldnt doubt there is a scorpion problem either. The machines in the appartments weather it be a washer or dryer will have its issues, but the guys who come to fix these things arent really tech's at all. They are just there to get the appartments by for the time being. The "fix it guys" are very poor at what they do, leaving dirty hand prints on the walls, or greasy foot prints on the tub shows that they are professionals.... Not to mention the half working, half busted gate turn nobbs where you constantly have to jiggle the key to get the darn thing to work. And yes, there is some little punk about 6ft walking around peeking into apartments, not to mention the wierdo dressed like some marilyn manson step child that chases little kids around. And there are countless people walking around with manilla envelopes stoping residents and asking them if they know where such and such apartment is. In responce to there LUSH landscaping, they had one of the BIG trees uproot and fall from the storm that tweeked through here last week. This place is over priced, over rated and does not reflect plush, lush or elligant and not to mention is lacking Professionalism. But hey, the A/C works!!!!

I agree, as well. I lived at Highlands August 2006- May 2007.
I'd never even seen a cockroach until I lived at highlands- within two months of living there, they were everywhere. I'd turn out my lights to go to bed... get up a couple minutes later and walk in the kitchen... guaranteed they'd be a handful of them on the table. Gross! I finally resorted to spraying them with raid (very unhealthy) and store bought traps-- no help offered from the management.
I also had my car stolen from highlands... it happened within one month of living there. The folks in the office just acted annoyed when I told them. At the very least, I expected a notice to be sent out to other tenants. But, from the sounds of it, this thing happens all the time. The problem is certainly a lack of lighting and supervision combined with the fact that apartments are turned inward, away from the parking lot.
Recently, I received a notice from a collections agency saying I owed highlands over $500... no call from highlands, just collections agency notices MONTHS after I moved out. I'm in the process now of trying to figure out what the $500 charges could possibly be for. I never paid my rent late and left the place spotless. My suspicions are that I am being charged for the damages done by the contractors who occupied my apartment for two weeks last spring (as I was trying to meet a manuscript deadline) to fix the piping (as other people have mentioned). They were in there for about two weeks everyday until after dark. Tenants had to move all their things according to maps provided by the managements and basically vacate their apartment as the work was being done, which really sucked for people like me who work from home during the day. No compensation was provided whats so ever- not even a reduction on rent (even though we could not make full use of the apartments we were being charged fully for). THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE! The landscaping is nice, and I like the architecture/room design of the apartments themselves and views of the mountains. That's what sucks you in!. I moved here from Boston hoping to live some place safe and nice. I was horribly disappointed! I learned that at highlands looks are deceiving
