I lived in Hilands in late nineties for little less than a year. Reading some of the reviews left on this site and checking the scores given by the other previous/current tenants tells me that not much changed in the last ten years. They brought back quite a few bad memories such as the rudeness of the staff, the noise level, security, etc..
I always thought that the staff were very unprofessional and rude. I guess professionalism requires more than a nice suit and a couple catch phrases. One would imagine that they had a lof of incentive to be courteous to people given quite a few of their units were always vacant. But maybe not. The one time that I was late with the rent for a day due to my work hours, the manager on duty the following day was incredibly rude and unyielding. Of course, when I brought to their attention that the "FREE" cable TV was not working, it took them forever (as in never) to address that issue.
Noise was always a problem. Although my neighbor did not crank up the volume on his TV set, I could hear it as if the set was in my own living room. Besides the paper thin walls, the isolation around the doors and frames were very inadequate. Same goes for the bedroom windows. What a joke of a construction quality!!! No more needed to describe the shape the kitchen and bathroom were in.
ABout the security; although my car was never broken into, it was strange to see at least a couple of the gates open (kept that way with rocks) at any given night. Although this was the responsibility of the tenants, twice nightly security patrols could easily resolve this.
In summary, I would not recommend this complex to anybody. As suggested by a few of the people who wrote comments, just stop by and ask the current tennants about their experience. Some might run away scared, but then others will be very receptive to the idea.

A 55% RATING??? YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!! I WOULDN'T GIVE THIS PLACE A 10% RATING AFTER LIVING HERE! FOR SOME REASON, EVEN THIS "RATING REVIEW SITE" WAS DIFFICULT TO FIND ON THE INTERNET...WONDER WHY??? I'LL TELL YOU WHY, BECAUSE MANAGEMENT DOES NOT WANT POTENTIAL TENANTS TO READ ALL OF THESE "BAD REVIEWS". IT'S A VERY OLD PROPERTY; POOR LIGHTING; UNSAFE; CONSTANT AUTO THEFT; POOR MANAGEMENT; EVEN WORSE MAINTENANCE...AND WHEN YOU MOVE OUT...BE PREPARED TO PAY A LOT OF $$$$$$$$$$$, BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO GET YOU AND YOU CAN'T DO A THING ABOUT IT. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TUCSON PROPERTY TO A SINGLE SOLE!!! BE WARNED!
