The complex looks great - lots of green, beatiful old palm trees... The problem I had, though, was with the staff.
When I first went to see the place, I was told my first month rent will be around $300 off. When I moved in, they said the first month will be free. I signed the lease papers without paying much attention what's in them; I specifically asked two staff members who were present if I owed something more and the answer was "no". Well, in about 2 months, the manager calls to tell me that they made a mistake and they will only honor $300 off, but they demanded I pay the difference for the first month. Fine.
Never mind the apartment was not quite ready when I moved in and it took few visits from maintainance to put it in order.
After having lived there for 7-8 months without defaulting on rent, I happened to run out of checks. I called them on 3rd of that month and said I'm putting the check (I just received the new ones) in the deposit box that night and explained what happened. You think they showed some courtesy' Of course not, they said they're charging $45 late fee. Mea culpa, business is business.
The list of damages when I moved in was fairly long. Anyways, when I moved out they took advantage and charged me $60 for "damage to blinds" - ones that wouldn't even move so I had to try to fix them as much as I could. Apparently, that was one thing I didn't include in the list of damages. You can never be careful enough. If they charged me for carpet cleaning, for example, that would still be within the theoretical realms of legitimacy but this way it was ugly. They couldn't have cared less about my noisy neighbours, so I had to put up with them. The answer to my complaint was that they're "nice people" and "we'll let them know". To be honest, I'm not sure - maybe they did initially, but the noise later continued... When those neighbours moved out, they were doing so around 2-3 AM for several nights in the raw. Aparently, some of the more distant neigbours complained about it and looks like my "nice" moving-out neighbours for whatever reason thought I was the one complaining (living next door). So, the last night they were crashing some glass outside and talked loud between themselves in a slightly threatening manner about "complaining neighbour" (me). The staff response' Not much, "let us know if anything happens".
Several times, I had a snake on my patio. When I called first time this happened, they started condescending speech about how we live in a desert and this is normal, blah, blah. Apparently, they thought the snake was on the lawn, and when they finally listened to me and realized it was on a patio, they were "sending somebody" who never came. I had to eventually take care of the snake myself (I have a small child who lived with me).
Heating got broke numerous times in the winter. I had maintainance people just changing fuses who-knows-how-many-times; ultimately, they left few fuses for me to change if it broke again. Guess what' One night the fuse box MELTED, we were lucky we didn't get on fire. We were awaken by the horrible smell of melting plastic. It was only then that they took their time to fix the problem.
There's more, like blocking my driveway by landscape trucks, then ant invasion that took two days of convincing the management has occured.
On the bright side, other than the maintainance problems I mentioned, they were OK fixing things and friendly, and the rest of the neighbourhood was nice, for the most part. They pride themselves with the superb landscaping and beatiful pools.
However, my feeling is that there was a clear tendency towards poorer tenant selection towards the end of my tenancy there.
In summary, my main problem was that the management in my opinion was phony and will try to take any advantage of you.
