The dark underbelly of paradise

I lived here from fall, 2004 to the end of 2005. The first problem was with the chain-smoking insomniac who lived below me. There were so many holes between the up- and downstairs apartments that I was often awakened in the middle of the night by a choking cloud of smoke. Managment actually was very good about offering another apartment until this resident was asked to move elsewhere. While I was there, a family of unknown composition moved into an adjacent one-bedroom apartment with somewhere between 3-5 people, including a 10 year old terrorist who strolled through the complex shooting his BB gun while erstwhile dad looked on with pride. They weren't asked to leave until I called the Sheriff after a loud altercation between mother and son that included her throwing his possessions out of the door while he screamed obscenities. Kids also took over the pool after management left for the night and kept the adults from enjoying it.
Then there were the ants: a marching colony that would invade my kitchen every time I left town for the weekend and after it rained. After many, many attempts to get Maintenance to plug the hole in the exterior wall they were coming in through, I finally got a can of mega-bug juice and sprayed it myself, which ended the problem. There were leaks in the roof every monsoon season that took two seasons to fix.
The grounds are beautiful except for the areas around the the cheaper 1-bedroom units at the front, where I lived. I took almost a year for me to get the yard guy to properly trim the pine tree that was growing onto my balcony, to rake the "dirt landscaping" and to clean up the dead plants and overgrown cacti around my building. Didn't realize how bad the management was until I called the district manager to complain about the lack of responsiveness. In retaliation, they refused to renew my lease. Compared to some dumps I've lived in, this place was calm and safe, but the maintenance staff and managment had some real issues.

One look at any photographs of Mission Palms (or go to the satellite photo section of Google) and it is obvious that this place is not a dump. This is an obvious case of "axe-grinding." Staff here is willing and quite able to handle all complaints. But some people will complain about everything and never be satisfied. If this "Dump" were a dump then you wouldn't have people coming back EVERY winter for over 25 years. Mission Palms is gorgeous on the surface and below the surface. Ask any resident. A great place to live. Bar none. |
