Opinions from 2.5-year tenant

I have been in Sandstone Apts. for around 2.5 years, and have to say the previous-posters have hit the nail pretty much on the head when describing the place...so basically I'm doing this as an update for those that are looking for recent posts.
Overall, the place is decent. I like the facility quite a bit...the pool is nice and is always clean, and the grounds are impeccable (by apartment standards, that is). I am not sure what previous posters were complaining about when it came to maintenance crews making noise in the mornings. I mean, the noise is there...no doubt...and you will here it (usually before 8:30)....but I'm not sure how they can complain about it, because they keep the grounds extremely well-groomed (they clean the parking lot every day & rake the rocks/mow grass at least 2 times a week).....do they expect people to do that stuff from 11:00-4:00 when it's 110-degrees outside'
The price is not THAT steep, in my opinion....it isn't cheap...but...feel it is reasonable.
The maintenance is great. Not only are the grounds kept clean, but if you file a work order for your aparmtent....they will probably be there within 15 minutes. They came 2 Saturdays in a row to my place...one on a holiday (Thanksgiving)...both times within 15 minutes.
The management recently changed and I have to say...it is not for the better. Cosmetically, the changes are not drastic...same service from maintence, pools, etc...but the property manager is not nearly as personable as the previous one. Of course...she was amazing in my book of apartment managers....but...that's another story...
The location is great. You are within 5 minutes of Target, Walmart, Tucson Mall (the biggest mall in Tucson), Subway, Blockbuster, gas, and pretty much every other daily need that isn't met by these companies is by another in some way. You are 10 minutes from the University of Arizona and is right next to an elementary school (& close to a middle school)....which is nice for students & parents.
Negatives'''
Crime. I have not had anything broken into...but of course...I have a car they would be crazy to break into for any reason. However...it happens. I hear gunshots (in the distance) sometimes. I have seen people scoping cars at night, heard of some being put on blocks, and more that have been broken into. Don't leave your mail in your mailbox overnight. The mail theft thing isn't just bad in this neighborhood though, it's all of Tucson (we have the 2nd highest rate of mail theft in the country in Tucson). My fiance doesn't go out at night alone...not really because it's a sure thing she would get mugged (or whatever)...but more because she isn't comfortable doing so than anything.
I can't say I have seen the "gangs" previous posters have mentioned. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but....I don't see it. There are drugs. I've seen a S.W.A.T. team raid an apartment right next to me (that was interesting) & have had at least one apartment with drug dealers within one apartment radius of mine (not the same on that was raided...they got out before then ;-)). My neighbor's apartment was broken into & trashed...by the drug dealers that got out before the raid.
Noise. It gets loud sometimes. Not as bad as some places I have lived...I can sleep...but, there are a lot of loud stereos in cars...which is the biggest "noise" issue, I would say.
Security. Pretty much non-existent. Right now they are using Bishop Security (as far as I know)....and I have not been impressed with them. They sit outside in one place and do nothing that increases my feeling of security...not sure of response times. I have spoken with friends at other complexes that use the same security company and none have been happy with it either. The doors are not locked. If they tell you they are...don't listen. If there isn't a rock propping open the gates, the lock has been broken with something.
There are a lot of apartments with a large number of tenants/apartment, from what I can tell. There are a alot of conclusions one can make from this...but one thing is for sure....they have 2 keys & don't seem to want to pay the $2.00 to copy one for everyone, as they need to break all the doors so they can get in. And "YES" that is who is doing it....drug dealers don't need to & criminals can easily jump the fence.
So....overall...the place is liveable. I have been here for 2.5 years...so it must not be that bad. The negatives I mentioned will definitely be present in the next few months (6 at least, I would say)...as those things don't change overnight....so if they sound bad & it is within that timespan of this post, you may want to re-consider...regardless of what management has told you about how good/safe it is. But, honestly, I am a believer that as long as you don't bother people, they won't bother you (when it comes to crimes, that is). i would suggest living here if you have a decent budget & want to be close to a ton of stuff...and like grass & nice facilities (pool, tennis court, b-ball court).
