i lived at this complex for 8 months. 2 weeks after i moved in, someone broke into an apartment and shot 2 of my neighbors. shortly after, my wife had a bike stolen (RIGHT OFF OF OUR PORCH...UPSTAIRS!!!). when i reported it to management, i was told that they were sorry, but could not help-and would not help. i asked about so-called security, and was told that there is a 'courtesy patrol' there 24/hrs a day...in 8 months, i never once saw this 'courtesy patrol.' neighbors constantly smoked marijuana. i called the police several times, and only got a response once...and it was 3 DAYS before they finally came to check it out. parking is always a problem because the latino gangs enjoy flooding the parking lot with their vehicles. i did not allow my wife to leave the apartment after dark because the gangs are constantly meandering around the property while tagging and defacing the complex-apparently unbeknownst to the courtesy patrol. every night, my wife and i would fall asleep to the sounds of a police chopper flying directly over our apartment chasing some gang bangers fleeing the scene of their crime in the wash RIGHT next to the complex. i have been a mechanic for 7 years, and HAD a locked toolbox secured in the bed of my truck. now, when not directly attached to the truck, this toolbox weighed over 400 lbs-too heavy for me and a buddy to move, let alone pick up...but apparently not too heavy for the hordes of gang drones that flock the unlit parking lot to take and pawn off. i filed a police report, got a phone call 2 weeks later, no help. i returned from a week of vacation only to find that the back tires of my car were flat. i found it odd that only the back tires were flat, and when i put air in them, i found that they had been slashed. once again, the 'courtesy patrol's' efficiency is astounding. after i called the cops, one came out about 3 hours later to take pictures...i have heard nothing since. if you are looking for a cheap apartment, and don't mind fearing for your life day after day, then villa monterey is the place for you.
