I've lived in this place for four years, and until the last few months, I've loved it. But since they started making "improvements" to the place (read: ways to raise the rent for future tenants), it's become a micromanaged nightmare.
It used to be the sort of place you could grow plants, now it's "landscaped"- and frankly, the plants the tenants grew were prettier. We were told to remove all "personal items" from the landings, porches, and patios. Except for this line: "Bicycles may be stored beneath the rear stairways in the provided enclosures." Well, I got home today to find that one of the periodic disposal purges had happened, and my bicycle (stored beneath the rear stairway) had been disposed of. Without warning, and after being told it could be stored outside. And god forbid the place look like anyone actually lives here.
People used to barbeque in the courtyards; now barbeques aren't allowed anywhere on the property.
Parking used to be free and on a waiting list basis; if you've lived here long enough, you'll be next on the list when a space comes open. The latest notice from management: from now on, a parking fee will be charged every month.
Basically, it's turning into one of those horrible micromanaged apartment complexes, rather than the nice, family-friendly, laid-back place I'd come to love. And as you can probably tell from my monthly rent, it's not the sort of place that any amount of "improvement" will make a high-end complex. Its uniqueness and charm were what sold me.
I'm so happy that I'm moving out at the end of the month.

As a fellow long term tenant, I actually appreciate that the management is "cleaning up" the place. It's neighborly, clean and doesn't look like a garage sale on the back porches. As for bicycles being allowed in the back porch areas, I believe that pertains to those that are actually in use, not chained to a post, with no wheels, and lying on the ground for years, which seemed to be your case.

I for one do not like seeing bicycles stored under stairways. It clutters up the place. You are lucky to have management who doesn't allow barbeques anywhere on the property. Last night I came home to my place only for it to smell like a big barbeque because the tenant below me likes to only cook out on his patio. He actually informed me that he doesn't use his stove but will only use his barbeque. When it is really hot out, I have to close my windows and swelter inside so my unit doesn't smell like a huge barbeque. Then there is the guy below me who smokes. I have to close my windows when he smokes. He is not only ruining his health but mine too with his second hand smoke!
