The nightmare continues

I'm the same person who posted the "ridiculous" review further down.
My husband and I moved out of Madison Park in October of last year. Before we moved out, I asked if our deposit of $400 could be kept by the apartment complex and credited toward the final amount we owed. (We were paying for the rest of our lease, which ended in mid-November.) The manager in the office said yes, and we received a final bill that indicated our deposit had been credited toward our charges. We paid the amount we owed in full, and my husband even followed up a few weeks afterward, stopping by the office to make sure our records indicated that our account was paid in full.
So everything's great. We've finally escaped Madison Park and are living in a new city closer to my work. But then, in early May, we receive a letter from a collections agency saying we owe Madison Park $400. This is the first indication we've ever gotten that the complex is still trying to collect money from us. I pay the amount immediately to attempt to protect our credit rating, but Madison Park will be hearing from us.
Basically, they're claiming we forfeited our deposit by breaking our lease, even though we paid for our entire lease AND moved out early, most likely allowing them to rent out our former unit to new tenants and effectively collect double rent from them and us during the period we paid for.
