Pretty, But You Can Do Better

My fiance and I moved into this apartment near the end of April 2006. We relocated here from out of state and, at first glance, this place seemed to be perfect. Beautiful lawns, friendly residents, nice amenities. Once our lease was signed and we were moved in, we began to see the true colors of the place. Originally, the office staff were curt and had little interest in helping you with your problems. Since then however, the manager has changed and, at the very least, they seem to listen to our concerns when we enter the office. They fix them about 50% of the time. When we called in our broken washing machine, which I knew was missing a bearing, and was becoming intolerably loud, we were told there was nothing wrong with it. We had to call it in again a month later because it stopped working. Guess what the problem was' A bad bearing. Our AC broke the first summer we were here, and while they replied to our maintenance request in a timely manner, the person sent to fix it simply vacuumed out the water from the leak and replaced the filter. He did nothing about the rust stains or the rust in the vent itself. The A/C still cools poorly, and to cool our bedroom at night, we have to shut the vents to the rest of the house. When the staff are working in an apartment, they have no qualms about parking in resident carports and more than not recently, our carport has been blocked by construction workers that don't speak English or staff that cannot be found. The office is attractive, and, now that the computers are working, is decent as an office/theater center. The gym equipment is sub-standard. Currently, the apartment complex is in the middle of a face lift and people are replacing the siding and balconies, though it doesn't appear to me that they are, or can, fix the structural issues. Some noise is to be expected during this time, though the people yelling after hours are a bit above and beyond. The complex has no security currently, and though they have been working the last few weeks, the gates are frequently broken. The exit gate, meant to be blocked with spikes, isn't as only a few of them remain standing. This makes it easy for even small cars to enter the complex from the wrong direction. Our neighbor had a motorcycle stolen a few weeks ago and our storage units were broken open just after that.
This complex isn't ALL bad. The staff holds occasional socials, and many of the residents here are families and kind people. The new manager seems genuinely concerned about the issues, though she did nothing about the break ins, not even sending out a letter to the other residents to be on the lookout. Hopefully, once the construction has finished, they'll have better gates and a security detail in the budget. Bottom line, if you don't have many valuable things, and it's important to you to live somewhere cheap, it's worth looking. Otherwise, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
