Good for students if you don't plan on studying

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2009
I've lived in Village apartments for nearly two years mostly because the choices of available living near campus is practically nonexistent. Apartments are nice sized for Arcata (850 sqft for a 2 bdrm) but pretty old. Carpets in every unit I've seen have been mismatched (different colors from one unit to the next and from one room to the next).
My apartment had fleas when I moved in from the previous tenants dog and I've been unable to get rid of them despite multiple flea bombs. We have ants consistently every summer. Also, the windows and bathroom are constantly accumulating mold. I realize this is common in Humboldt, but I shouldn't have to bleach my drapes every other month to keep them from growing mold from water leakage.
Hot water is shared between units and often in short supply. Walls are paper thin and I hear my neighbors having sex/arguing/bumping music at all hours of the day and night. Most of the tenants seem to be students but those that aren't are pretty sketchy. We've called the cops on neighbors threatening to kill each other or beating their kids multiple times and we were on police lock down for over twelve hours last summer when one tenant started shooting a crossbow at people from him apartment and the swat team had to come out. Note: if there have been snipers on the roof, it's not a safe building!
Maintenance is so-so. They're polite, but always seem to be out of town when we need them and any requests will take awhile to get done (I've had a hole in my ceiling from the latest pipe leak for days now and no one seems to care). In two years I've had THREE pipes in my ceiling burst and flood the apartment (apparently this is fairly common). Management lives on site, but the office is only open from 4-5pm Monday-Friday so trying to get a hold of them for anything is impossible and if you leave a message they do not return calls. This includes for trying to move out and get a reference.
Laundry rooms are never cleaned, have ancient machines and usually need repairs (EVERY light bulb was out in my LR for over a week before they come to replace the bulbs). There are constantly peoples wet cloths left molding for days at a time and there are only 2 washers so be prepared to need to handle someone else's underwear if you ever want to get any laundry done.
Overall, if you plan on selling drugs to finance your education or want to beat your girlfriend this seems like an okay place. If you actually want to be able to sleep at night, find something else. I wish I could, but the management won't return the calls of the apartments I've applied for to get out of here...
