The post below mine is a joke.
The co-op system is rad. The houses include food and have a more family feel, but since this is apartment ratings, I'll describe my apartment situation at Rochdale.
I pay less than $500 a month for my own room in a 2 bedroom. It's small but definitely cozy. There's a balcony from our living room and all utilities are paid for including internet. Washing machines are 50 cents a load (dryers are 25 cents though they suck). The best part is that you can do whatever you want to your apartment. Paint it (my walls are aqua), install shelving, etc. Bed, desk, dresser and sometimes sofas are included, but their quality is a crapshot. I like that the apartment's close to campus, but its close proximity to Telegraph leads to noise and break-ins, so just lock up well.
You need to have seniority in the co-op system in order to get an apartment of your choice here, but if you have EOP status chances are good you can start out in a 4 bedroom, which are even cheaper (less than 400/month).
Check out www.usca.org for more info. Apply now even if you're still in the dorms and you'll get more priority come next year. Happy Hunting.
