student housing

UC Berkeley student only co-op apartments, owned by UC Berkeley (although few people seem to know that). Some apartments are awesome, some are horrendous. In the last apartment I had, one of the walls had rotted out, but the one I'm in now is well taken care of with a beautiful view... for the same price. The management is wonderful and the maintenance is getting better. The problem is that students run maintenance and budget is limited so few things really get fixed. It is getting better under Kim's (the apartment manager) guidance. This place in theory is not pet friendly, but they do turn a blind eye, although they probably won't for large dogs. This place is LOUD though, with people that seem to think blasting their music with the speakers pointed outside of the window, for some unknown reason. And forget it if you have to sleep on the weekends, because 2 am is the time that they are required to be quiet, not before. So, party/slacker friendly, not for serious students with jobs. It is cheaper than most in the area, but not by much anymore after the Chateau lawsuit and the seismic retrofitting of CZ and cloyne. Parking is a NIGHTMARE. 40 spots for 250 people... you won't get a spot if you don't have seniority. period. The landscaping is nice, but not maintained because, again, students take care of it so that rent is cheaper. The hot water is wonderful though; solar panels cover the roofs and your hands will get burned under the faucet unless you're careful. Living this close to telegraph brings the homeless and crime though, and I've heard of many things stolen, particularly over winter break when no one is here. The high level of recycling also attracts them, leading to a feeling of unease, at least for me. It seems that others aren't bothered though, because they keep letting them in the gates.. Overall I'm satisfied, but I am a poor student used to dirty housing/living. The manager is wonderful though.
