Clean, bright, and worth the price.

I lived here for a little over a year, and would have loved to stay, but my roommate in our 1-bedroom apartment moved out. Overall, it was a great place to live, especially compared with a lot of the other buildings near the UC Berkeley campus.

Good points:
- Great location. Near UC Berkeley, grocery stores and restaurants, not too far from BART station, and on a well-lit, well-traveled stretch of road.
- Building was well-maintained and the management was reasonably friendly and attentive to concerns.
- The appliances were fairly new, the carpet was replaced and the place was freshly painted when I moved in.
- Pretty spacious for a 1-bedroom, 1-bath apartment, and lots of closet/storage space.
- Kitchen was a good size for me, and I cook most meals at home.
- On the 3rd floor, there was a lot of light, and a nice view of the Bay.
- The entryway is pleasant, and has a semi-secure buzzer system.
- Laundry room is on the top floor of the building and has a nice view.
- Cool central vacuum system - you plug a hose into a hoel in your wall and voila! - dirt is magically sucked away! If you have a vacuum, you might not bother using this, but it was very convenient for me, and also means you don't have to worry about vacuum bags.

Minor nuisances:
- On the Shattuck side of the building, there was a fair amount of truck noise that came in, and also some truck exhuast, even on the third floor.
- The 3rd floor west-facing view was very bright, in a generally good way, but especially in the late afternoons and the summer, this could make it fairly hot in the apartment.
- We had ants on one occasion, and they somehow managed to get in the fridge and the freezer (where they promptly bit the dust). We tried a variety of things, but ultimately it required arsenic traps and a visit from our friendly pest control professional who sprayed permethrin. This took care of the problem for at least several months more before I moved out.
- Pool wasn't maintained optimally. It was usable, and wasn't disgusting by any means, but it also wasn't pristine; there was a larger-than-desirable collection of dead bugs floating around on the surface.
- On occasion we could hear more than we really wanted to hear from our next-door neighbor's apartment, but this was no more significant in this building than anywhere else I've lived.
- At the time, more expensive than some of the other buildings in the area. But definitely higher-quality than most of those buildings.

No opinion:
- Didn't have a car, so don't know much about the parking situation, but I'm pretty sure parking cost extra and there may have been a waitlist.
