Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2008
Country Woods is a decent place. I've lived here for almost three years now (2 years in a 1br/1bath and almost a year in a 2br/2bath) and will be renewing the lease for a bit longer.
First the good:
-Country Woods is situated in a very safe area. Often you will see people in the surrounding community jogging/walking at all times of the day and even in the night. Tennis courts are always being utilized either by a local tennis team (I'm assuming from the nearby local high school) or private instructors.
-The community is also very hospitable. I haven't had any problems with the neighbors surrounding me (in both apartments I've stayed in) as it seems to be mostly small families that live in my part. Most of the tenants are bashful and will look to the ground when you pass by, but most will respond nicely if you say hi.
-The staff is generally pretty friendly, especially the maintenance guys. As long as you give these guys time to do their job and not expect things to be done now now now, they'll get things done in a few days. The longest I had to wait to replace a ceiling fan was 3 days (which isn't bad at all). The front office personnel seems to change every year, but I haven't had any big issues with them. They do a good job of notifying you if they're going to do major work around the complex like water shut down, tree trimming, etc. They also try to give back to the community by organizing events during certain holidays (although I never went to any of them).
-Heating units in bedrooms do their job well.
-Ceiling fan in master bedroom is a nice touch. Especially in the summer months. Only for 2 bedroom apartments I believe.
And the not so good:
-Apartments themselves are pretty old. Popcorn ceilings, dated cabinets, walls have seen many coats of paint, etc but I don't really mind such things.
-The wall A/C units will not reach the bedrooms so you'll need to have some sort of air circulation in the apartment for the summer months (it does get pretty hot in summer and pretty cold in the winter) or a separate air conditioner.
-The complex is situated right next to the 57 freeway. Depending on your perspective, this isn't such a bad thing. The complex has running streams of water so 80% of the freeway noise is drowned out with the windows open (I live right next to the freeway). Plus there are enough trees between the complex and the freeway so you hardly notice there's an off-ramp. The running water also gives a nice touch.
-Water heating can be sporadic. In our old apartment, hot water would fluctuate so if you were taking a shower, the water would go from hot to cool and then hot again. In our current apartment, the kitchen sink's hot water pressure drops off after a little while. I've gotten used to it so it's no big deal anymore, but can get frustrating sometimes. Also, the shower can get scalding hot if someone in the same building flushes a toilet or uses cold water.
-Spiders. Lots of spiders at first. Usually found them in the bathrooms just hanging out. After getting rid of them for a few weeks, they haven't shown themselves too much since. None of them are dangerous (I read somewhere that almost all indoor spiders are harmless to humans) but can be startling nonetheless.
-Even if you park your car under a carport, your car will get dirty. With all the vegetation and dust that gets kicked up from the freeway, your car will get dusty if it's kept in one place for more than a few hours.
Overall, I'd stay in this place for as long as possible, but they don't allow dogs (unless medically required). If we didn't recently move in 9 months ago, we probably would have moved just because I want to get a dog =). I'd definitely recommend this place.
