Awful, run down, no repairs...lived there for 27 years

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2006
My parents raised me in these apartments. They were built in 1963, and in 1977, they weren't too bad. Good location, better residents that cared for their home and surroundings. The workmanship of the apartments was always shoddy though. The management was always pretty nasty (and this is the opinion of both a child and an adult. The property was originally owned by a man with the last name Patty. He would sometimes come around the street in a limo (I kid you not). The management was always evidently instructed to repair only if you must, and with the cheapest materials or used appliances you can find. My parents have only had their carpet changed once in 27 years, walls painted once too. Their dishwasher and oven have been broken for 10 years, the closet doors broken in the master bedroom for close to 15. My father now sets them asside and rests them against the wall. Unfortunately my mother passed away in this hovel. The aparmtent is now owned by an asian man who knows little about property management. The main support beams going through the center of the 4-unit buildings are dry rotted, as well as some of the supporting planks of the stone stairs for the upstairs patios. If a structural engineer or inspector could see this, the place would undoubtedly be condemmed. It has really turned into a slum. Crime has increased, and the only protection you have is your neighbors looking out for you, if you are lucky as my parents have been to have good neighbors. The apartments are ethnically diverse, which has acutally helped matters; my parents have found their non-caucasion neighbors to be more loyal, friendly and helpful than many others, and certainly more social despite cultural differences. This is the only positive I can think of. These apartments were good for about the first 3-5 years I lived there...beyond 1982 they went down the tubes. The current property manager probably means well, and the maintainence guy is friendly, but I wouldn't recommend moving into this apartment unless you are extremely desperate and only planning to stay there a very short while. WHile this was my home as a child, teenager and adult and holds many fond memories, I'm not blind to the pain and suffering my parents and I have been through living there. If we could have afforded anything else that was close enough for my father to walk to work (so my mother could have the car), we would have done so LONG ago. Good luck.
