Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004

When I first moved into Avalon at Media Center in October of last year, I loved the complex. It was in a great area and the office staff seemed very polite. Yes, the studio I rented was a little small, and I didn't have central air or heat or a dishwasher, but it seemed like a decent apartment in a great area. The complex also has a very nice 24 hour fitness center. The area is the apartment's only plus.

On my first day moving in I asked the leasing office for the remote for my garage. They couldn't find it. Upon further inspection (which took a week) they discovered that an abandoned pick up truck (no plate/vin number) was parked in my garage. At first they ticketed it. It took until December 5th for them to tow it. Sure they gave me a car port to park for the first month, but I couldn't move any of the stuff into the garage storage. My apartment was cramped with boxes for the first two months I lived there. Speaking of winter, there is no central heat. Only a box sticking out of the wall. The livingroom/bedroom was fine but everywhere else was freezing. I stuck a thermometer in my bathroom. It was 60 degrease in it.

On to spring/summer. The central air pretty much works the same way as the heat. However the apartments have no insulation whatsoever therefore even after cranking the air for hours, it was still 85-95 in my apartment. When I told the leasing office they told me to clean the filter and close my windows. (Gee like I hadn't thought of that.) My power bill for the month of August was close to 100 dollars for a 450 sq. foot apartment.) I also have mold growing around my air conditioner. (Apparently there is not enough mold for it to matter.) I tried to install a timer on my air conditioner to save on energy costs. When I tried to install the wiring I noticed that the air conditioner itself had a strange plug, it didn't look American. Upon further inspection of the outlet, I discovered that instead of buying a converter for the plug, they simply just drilled holes into the outlet to make everything fit. (I'm not kidding!) This apparently is also "up to their standards."

The leasing office staff is a serious issue. They never relay messages to maintenance. (The maintenance staff is great, the leasing office is the problem.) Sure, something like a hinge can wait a week (they do have 750 apartments) but I don't think I should have to wait two weeks for my garbage disposal to be unclogged when it was overflowing into my sink and floor. The overflowing caused my sink to rust and I had to spent hours cleaning it with CLR. Did the leasing office care' No. When my toilet was not flushing properly they told me I wasn't using it correctly. (There is more than one way to flush a toilet' I've been living there for nine months, I think I know how to flush a toilet!)

My apartment is also very stinky. It has a very stale musty smell that has been permeated into my clothes. I have to spray some items with Fabreeze before I wear them. The carpet needs to be replaced badly. I think it is part of the smell.
The walls/floor are very thin. So thin, I can hear my downstairs neighbor puking at 4 AM. Also on very hot days when the sun is shining on the building my wall is hot to the touch. There is no insulation!

The straw that finally broke the camel's back happened today. I came home to find my DVD tower on the floor, with my dvd's scattered everywhere. My plates and glasses were on the floor, shattered (OK I didn't close my cabinet but still this shouldn't happen) and my bookcase had fallen down. Apparently there is a "structural problem" and they will "look into it." Yeah right.

To sum up my long review. Good neighborhood, but very expensive. (Not to mention a major rent hike year to year if you stay.) I've never had a problem with burglaries however the lock on the gated entry is very cheap. (I can use my car key to get in if I need to.) However the office staff sucks. They are rude and don't care. Not to mention there is such a huge turnover that you have no idea who will be there one month to the next. However if you don't have enough turmoil in your life, be sure to move into Avalon at Media Center and you will have plenty of problems to make your life even more stressful!
