Town Center should be a Ghost Town

After we had resigned ourselves to living with above-market-value rents which increase up to 25% each lease cycle, rude staff, staff-led APARTMENT INSPECTIONS which regularly invade your privacy, management sending us bills for their use of water to supply the three fountains installed, noise levels so bad that 99 apartments signed onto a petition to stop it (unsuccessfully), and new signs warning us the entire building is a cancer risk - what finally made us all fed up was an unwanted construction project that has gone on in one form or another since January 2002. Jackhammers, paint stripper fumes, hydraulic drills, hammering, and diesel generators running inside the enclosed complex have all become second nature to the residents here. Last year we began organizing and contacting the city for help. In a small victory, we learned that Town Center hadn't even applied for building permits for much of their work. The air quality management district was called out and found several violations of air safety. The media was also contacted. At one point, residents began organizing a rent strike and threatening to start it. Throughout, management has been unresponsive and rude - one tactic has been used quite repeatedly: threatening to evict anyone who speaks out and complains. That's why I have to write anonymously. The in-house managers are changed every 3-6 months to limit accountability and certainly hampers resident's abilities to lodge a complaint, follow up, and obtain resolution. All staff members refuse, however, to give us contact information for the upper management off site. Calls made to RW Selby, the owners of the property, are never returned. Letters aren't replied to. Not surprisingly, they have the lowest rating from the Better Business Bureau!
