The management is right out of Gulag Archipelago.
The office seems to have a chronic problem with screwing up their parking lot assignments. Then, they post threatening flyers, ordering us to turn over our DMV registrations to "prove" we belong in our own parking spaces or they will TOW our cars. Can you believe this' What about privacy or identity theft issues' This is not the first time this has happened.
They publish a "newsletter" that includes recipies for cookies, but when the swimming pool was out-of-order for several weeks (or was it months') NOT ONE WORD in the following newsletter about what the problem was or when the pool might be opened.
When several apartments were destroyed by FIRE a few weeks ago, I didn't notice a mention in the following newsletter. HOW MUCH LONGER is the re-construction activity and noise going to continue'
Living here is like living in the former Soviet Union when it comes to information and management style, policing things that are petty and appearing to IGNORE important issues that impact our enjoyment, health and safety.
When the electric gate is out-of-order, as it has been on several occasions, sometimes for weeks, instead of leaving it open, in the past they have locked it down (I don't believe the fire department allows this). This forces you to drive around the entire complex to get out while other cars are trying to get in. Also, if you're trying to get in, you have to turn around in the cramped parking area to get back out, drive around the block, and use the other gate. It's dangerous as can be. I ordered the maintenance guy to open the freakin' gate, and he smiles and says, "Sorry, the office told me not to." I think somebody finally contacted the fire department about this unsafe gate lock-down, the office relented and just kept it open.
They allow small pets. The animals urinate down the wall, my door, and on top of the aging air conditioner. When you turn the noisy air conditioner, it fills the apartment with the stench of cat urine and animal dander. BE SURE TO TEST THE AIR CONDITIONER in YOUR prospective apartment (NOT THE MODEL APARTMENT).
I've complained and they tell me, "The maintenance guy says that the unit cools to the desired whatever degrees, so it's not broken." My air conditioner blows cool, not cold. It's an ancient energy HOG and the metal cooling fins are clogged with YEARS of FUR and DANDER from all manner of small furry animals.
The good news is that the cats from present and past residents will leave really cute paw prints on the roof and hood of your BMW. Especially after it rains. If you have kids, they will be delighted by the animal tracks (it's a kids thing).
There are some nice pluses to living here: The grounds are attractive but have slipped in the past two years. Also, we're adjacent to an excellent biking and running trail that winds along a creek for miles. If you work at eBay on Hamilton Avenue, this is a superb apartment location, you'll be able to work 70 hours a week and run away screaming along the river trail at the end of the day. Just be sure to have your asthma inhaler ready for when you come back home and turn on your dander-clogged air conditioner.
Bottom line: If you have a nostaligia for Stalinist CCCP, or are an indentured servant at eBay on an H1B Visa, or want to live in a petting zoo, this place is for you! Get a copy of PRAVDA when you sign a lease at Gulag River Walk.
