A review by a long-term tenant

I've lived here since the mid 90s. The rent for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment is now $1350, which is kind of high for what you get. The apartments are a decent size and if you're just moving in, you're likely to get hardwood floors. However, if you've been here forever and are paying over $1300, as we are, it feels like a total ripoff. The wall unit air conditioners are the same as when I moved in during the early-mid 90s. They are very noisy and the living room unit (which also cools the master bedroom) doesn't do a damn bit of good cooling the kitchen area. The upper level apartments are nearly impossible to keep cool. The walls and ceilings are VERY thin. If your bedroom is next to a studio apartment, you are screwed. You can hear EVERYTHING. If you have an active neighbor above you, it's like having a herd of buffalo up there. Over the last several years, I've seen a serious decline in the quality of the tenants in this building. People have NO respect anymore. Neighbors have no problem turning on their TVs full blast at 4am, vacuuming at midnight, talking on their phones out on their balconies at all hours of the night, hanging out with their friends for hours after 10pm on the street in front of the building instead of going inside where they might actually disturb people marginally less. If you ask them nicely to stop, they ignore you. If you yell at them, they yell back, even though they are the ones who are being completely inconsiderate. Our longtime manager recently moved on to a different apartment building and, since then, it takes a minimum of 2-3 calls to the office to get anything fixed properly. In other words, you place a maintenance call, maintenance comes a day or two later and does what they think was meant by whomever took the call, which has little to no relation to what actually asked to have done. Then, you call the office again and ask them to fix it. Maintenance does the same thing or something similar again. You call a third time and then maybe it's fixed right or you have to call again. Rarely does anything get taken care of properly the first time around. I like our maintenance staff very much, which makes this even more frustrating. I don't know if the people in the office aren't taking the orders down correctly, or aren't communicating to the maintenance staff correctly, but whatever it is, the quality of service has dropped sharply. As for safety, I've heard of drug deals going on in the alley next to the parking lot, but I have never witnessed anything of the sort. Cars have gotten broken into when they were parked on the street in front of the parking lot instead of in front of the building. At one time, I would have recommended these apartments, but not anymore. If I were making more money, I would move out in a hot minute.

Everything this person says is true. You would not believe how bad this place has gone downhill. Fireworks blew off on July 5th close to midnight and almost set the place on fire. I was so scared for my daughter and myself - - we live on the street part of the apartment building and those setting off the illegal fireworks just stood in the street and laughed. We would report them but are too fearful of retaliation. Police did show up several hours later. I know this because I stayed up to wait and see if my baby and I were going to be safe. Those who do these things get away with it constantly. Management may be just as scared as we are.

Speaking of the police, there was a time when one of the tenants had a psychotic episode, screaming all kinds of racial slurs, talking to himself, smashing things in his apartment, etc. and we called the police several times, as did the manager, and probably several other tenants. It took the police HOURS to show up. I think it was six hours, but it may have been "only" three. And this is after we told them that we heard cracking sounds that could have been gunshots. The tenant ended up being hospitalized and never came back, thank goodness, but the police response was astoundingly slow. We live in Canoga Park, not a war zone, why were they so slow to respond? This is not the fault of the apartment management, obviously, but it is indicative of what you can expect if you call the police. Another time, someone was shot in front of the apartment building down the street (two buildings down from our building, north of Kittridge), but I believe that was the result of some personal vendetta, not a random drive-by shooting, if that makes you feel any better. I still feel relatively safe here, because, really, how often do your neighbors flip out or get shot by vengeful people in cars? But, I hope I never have to call the police again while living here because it is futile.
