We had been complaining about a mold problem in our apartment for years. We were told by the off-site "community director" and her "assistant-of-the day" (they change constantly) that all we have is mildew and not mold and it is not unhealthy. However, mildew IS mold! And mold IS unhealthy!
I never had any respiratory problems...nor do I smoke. However, when about two months ago I began to cough constantly, and suspected that it was due to the mold in our apartment, we hired an environmental company to check it out.
They only did a tape-and-lift test and only in areas where mold was visible. But, in just those areas alone SIX different types of mold were found.
When I wound up in the hospital (for over a month) my daughter/roomate requested that the enviromental company come back to check another area where mold wasn't visible, but where there was a strong odor.
As it turned out that particular area is so contaminated that it requires a bio-hazard worker protected with a hepa-filtered respirator, safety goggles, gloves and protective clothing to "clean" it.
When word got out to the FPI "regional manager", about us hiring the enviromnental company, she decided to come to our apartment to view our complaints.
At the time I was in the hospital, so the (current) leasing agent called and left a message on our answering machine for us to set up a day that the "viewing" could take place.
Then instead of waiting for our call, to set up an appointment, a 24 hour "Notice of Intent to Enter Premises" was posted on our door.
Against doctor's orders I temporarily discharged myself from the hospital in order to be at home for the "invasion".
When shown the visible mold the "regional manager" instructed the maintenance man to take pictures of it. Then she said that it was "GOOD MOLD" and that we had no complaint and that we should just spray it with bleach.
When we tried to hand the "regional manager" the report from, the environmental company, she refused to take it. She just literally screamed at us saying that she was the "property manager" (she obviously doesn't even know her title) and that we were only renters and that she has the final say.
When she left I went back to the hospital and was readmitted.
A few days later it was found that my lungs are bleeding (just one of the symptoms of mold exposure that I have).
I'm now on oxygen and need to use a nebilizer four times a day. I also have to take several medications to try to help me get by day by day.
My doctors strongly suggested that I don't go back to Parkwood after discharge from the hospital. But, at the time we had no place else to go.
However, we have since found another apartment and are now in the process of packing to move, which my physical condition makes even more difficult.
To date management has not contacted us regarding the mold situation. Instead they did try to prevent us from breaking the balance of our lease.
Now we suspect that they will try to take us to court about it. That is if they dare....

I lived here during these times too and I know who this tenant is. She's totally schizo and psychotic and loved to complain about everyone, even those people who were nice to her and lived around her!

aptdwllr81, The tenant you're calling schizo and psychotic was my neighbor and has become my friend. Therefore you're either a member of staff or the upstairs neighbor who played the stereo at it's loudest level at all hours of the day and night. I heard it myself. And I also heard that neighbor deliberately stomping her feet as she walked which actually caused the windows to rattle. Other than complaints about the psycho upstairs, she complained about the noise from people partying on their balconies outside her bedroom window until the wee hours of the morning. Perhaps you're one of THEM? If so I complained about you too. Bringing you up to date she moved to a place with no mold (as did I), no longer needs oxygen, filed a law suit for lung damage, and collected a hefty sum as settlement.
