Yo!

Rotting wood, quiet complex, etc

The sign on the street says Sierra Meadows, the office staff answer, "Sierra Meadows" - I don't know anything about this Caza Bella business. But that could be an indication of deeper problems.

The floor plan is dreamy, large master bedroom, small 2nd bedroom. You can have 2 baths, or one bathroom that has doors both to the master bedroom and hallway. Pretty clever, I thought. Standard galley kitchen, spacious dining area, and nicely sized great room. The patio is spacious, and there are outdoor laundry (W/D) hookups. The management allows some creativity in 'landscaping' your patio, make sure your plan fits theirs. (example, all patio umbrellas should be tan - at least until they paint the buildings a new color.)

The complex is located directly across from Clovis' largest skate park, the noise from which is seldom heard even one building in from the street. The complex itself is kept very quiet, with only occasional maniacs driving through the parking lot. Ambulances/fire trucks are heard driving by fairly frequently, with their sirens. The garbage collectors at 8am is a habitual noise disturbance, but to be expected in any apartment complex. The Managers allow dogs to bark.

Sounds a little ideallyic to me. Beware the downside:

In my apartment, every wall behind the cabinets have some rot. The bathroom cabinet is so rotted it has a 4 inch hole at the base, where all manner of bugs have made appearances. Cockroaches, which the management has blamed on this tenant, has been an on going problem. But rather than taking a proactive approach, the management was busy pointing fingers of blame before taking action, and then did a whole-building bug-bombing (covering clothes, furniture, food, dishes and cookware) with pesticide they did not provide safety data for, nor gave adequate clean-up instructions. (Thank God for Google!!) And instead of killing the vermin, the management's over-the-counter worthless 'catch-all' only made them grow bigger.

The manager does not return phone calls on a timely basis, and prefers to do inspections when you are NOT home (even when you make special arrangements to wait around for her all day, she will wait all day before she comes by, hoping you get bored waiting and leave anyway). Repairs will always be blamed on you, or deemed a necessary and functional part of the apartment (ex: a 6 inch hole cut into the drywall under the kitchen sink is for a 'clean out access', rather than covering it with something they can remove for access, even when the opening is allowing vermin into the apartment.) or silly unrelated 'solutions' are given as advise rather than an actual physical inspection and/or real solution (ex: 'use a wad of steel wool in the hole to keep the cockroaches from coming in' - really'' in a 6 inch hole' and steel wool is mice - you moron! cockroaches will still come through it.)

The place is easily over 30 years old, and some apartments are touted as having 'new carpet', 'new microwave', 'new stove' or other 'new' appliances. They use the term 'new' in a relative sense. Other things are not new: the wiring - lights short out constantly, blowing out lightbulbs as I've never seen before; the plumbing - caulking needs renewing in many places, kitchen and bath sinks are worn and chipped in places; flooring is NOT new - linoleum from the 70's (easily!) in the bathroom, could be 10 years old in the kitchen/dining area; Popcorn ceilings; and God only knows how OLD this carpet really is!

Let's just say that the PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL we had come in to treat the roaches, said they were living under the 'new' carpet. YUCK!
