I lived at The Lakes when I was a college student in 2003. At the time, we paid $1550 for a two bedroom/two bath. We've never had any bugs or maintenance problems.
Here are some pros:
1. I loved the included washer and dryer units located in storage room on the balcony.
2. I have a strong fear of worms and snails, so I love the fact that when it rains, I can park underground and take the elavator up to my floor without ever seeing them.
3. There is a security guard who sits at the front gate all night long and asks you for your name and apartment every time you come home at night. He looks it up in his binder to match the descriptions you give him. My boyfriend (now husband) visited all of the time. At first, he questioned him a lot. I even think he took down his license plate and name the first time. But then he got to know him, so he just lets him through. It's a pretty safe community. I've never heard of any cars getting broken into, but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. 4. The space is pretty large and good for 3 people. The neighbors are respectable and quiet most of the time.
5. The lake behind the apartment is extremely beautiful, especially at night. That's where my husband first told me he loved me! I know, cheesy!
CONS:
1. Parking for those who don't have a permanent space is terrible at night, but like most apartments, not impossible.
2. We had one person in the office who always helped us with our paperwork, and she's extremely absent minded. She has made mistakes on a lot of our paperwork. It's annoying, but nothing we can't deal with.
Overall, I loved this complex. If my husband and I could, we would move back to Costa Mesa and into the same apartments. After living at some others, we realized what you're paying for is the area and community, not the apartment. We've had our fair share of living in "ghetto" communities for a few hundred dollars less than The Lakes, and it's definitely not worth it, especially if you have a family. Every apt. has their pros and cons, but at The Lakes, their pros definitely outweighs the cons.
