There has been some construction going on here for the past week or so and the noise level has been atrocious. It starts at 8:30 am and lasts well until the late afternoon. The drilling is extremely and excessively noisy and has made staying inside my apartment completely UNBEARABLE.

I work from home and I have to actually physically leave my house during the daytime because I am unable to bear this noise pollution. I am aware of the fact that the construction is going on between the hours of 9-5 when the "majority" of people are
generally at work, but there are still quite some people home during those times such as people who are self-employed, people work graveyard shift, students, homemakers, people who have the day off perhaps.

I have NEVER lived at an apartment complex where they would have such LOUD construction going on inside the actual building where there are current tenants residing. It does not matter that they are doing construction during hours where "most" of the tenants are gone, if there are ANY tenants still inside the units it is a health hazard. These rents here are WAY too expensive for this excessive noise. There was a point when the noise level was probably deafening and a threat health wise, there is no way that this level of noise would not affect you physiologically in some way, whether it would be affecting your hearing or stress-level or something else. I am definitely not exaggerating when I say that it is extremely loud. The construction is going on inside the building and the sound penetrates the walls and is at a deafening level, even with all the windows closed and even when I am plugging my ears with my fingers I can STILL hear it. Long term exposure will definitely lead to some sort of health problems/hearing loss. This is NOT an exaggeration. It is akin to living in an actual war zone!

I really hope some other residents will chime in and agree with me. I understand that this construction is only "temporary" and only going on in certain buildings, yet it is still a huge inconvenience.

If you are moving in a few months from now, the construction will probably be over and it probably won't affect you (lucky you). This is for the people who are living here NOW, in THIS moment. Also, if you are gone weekdays 9-5 you will probably not realize the extent of the noise but if you happen to be unlucky enough to be home during those hours you will definitely know what I am talking about (if you are residing in the buildings where the drilling is taking place).

Plus management doesn't really acknowledge the noise level and never even gave us a notice of apology or even a warning for the inconvenience. They usually hand out newsletters for everything including resident events or new yoga classes, but what about noise that is so loud that it actually interrupts the flow of daily life' I'm sure some residents have actually had to readjust their schedules to accommodate the construction (such as leave during the daytime in order to prevent serious hearing loss).

Usually I'm quite a tolerant person, this is not just "light construction" or "light noise", this is industrial-strength hardcore drilling which is so loud it can pierce your ears and cause your ears to actually ring. (There were times when I actually felt my ear ringing on one side and pain. That's what I got for not leaving my apartment and staying in for the day.) It is an actual health hazard, not just an inconvenience. I cannot believe they would subject residents already paying too much for an apartment to this ear deafening noise.

Management probably doesn't care if they lose a few unhappy tenants because of the noise, cause after they finish the construction they can jack up the rent even more for new prospective tenants, so obviously they have everything to gain.

Also, the construction workers probably have industrial-strength ear plugs to protect them from hearing loss. WE HAVE NOTHING! I am pretty sure that all this noise has affected my hearing in some way, there were days when I actually had pain in my ear. I have learned now to readjust my schedule and just leave the house when they are drilling. I guess that is the price I have to pay for the privilege of living here.

So now I drive around aimlessly all day and wait for the day to be over so I can come back home. Perhaps I'll go across the street to South Coast Plaza and walk around waiting for the drilling to be over, and then perhaps sit at Starbucks and read something or use the internet there... There was a time when I had a late night the day before and was interrupted during my sleep at 8am by the drilling; I actually had to drive somewhere quiet so I could take a nap in my car! Yes, I slept in my car!!
At least it was quiet and peaceful in my car...

Everything else in the apartments is fine, gym is great, security is ample. Apparently they are adding a ton of amenities and offering more high-end penthouses etc. I believe they are upgrading the place in a major way in order to compete with the new apartment complex being built across the street on Sakioka from the Irvine Company.

Thank you for voicing your opinion. I am a current tenant at The Lakes and just posted my opinion. I was told by one of the managers that the construction will go on for about two years, so I don't expect reduction of the noise and dust pollution during that time. The construction workers were moving their equipment today, on a Saturday. I scheduled a meeting with the managers to talk about the conditions and what can be done. I have talked to them before and landed on 'deaf ears'. At this point I don't know if I should seek legal or medical advice first, it has affected the quality of my life, my work, and my health. I appreciate every effort on the tenants part to voice their disappointment with the current situation.

I have been suffering from the noise and dust since it started and I'm amazed that noone has bothered to organize a tenants association so we could contact the board of health en masse concerning our health. I know this is risky but I would be happy to join.

OMG- Update 11/09. I am the one who originally posted this review. More drilling today in my building. Make the noise stop! I am trying to sleep here! Ok, so I know normal people sleep at night etc but my schedule is a bit off lately, but come on now. I can't even have peace and quiet in my own place. This is just terrible. Constant drilling, hammering. When will this madness end? It's driving me nuts. Someone help!

It's sheer torture, a terrible physical and mental health hazard, maddening. It's been going on for months. Management doesn't care. We just moved here, too, and can't afford to move again. They gave us no warning at all. We're trapped. I try to work at home, wear earplugs and I still can't think or sleep. We wake up pissed and go to bed pissed. My cats are completely freaked all the time. I've never in my life heard such loud noise. It lasts from 8:00 to 5:00 every day. And from what I understand from management, the construction will continue for, "years and years." Let's sign a petition or something, because this is absolutely criminal.
