I was in a pinch and moved in here with a roommate in April, 2005. Due to many factors beyond my control, I gave in and signed a lease here.
I won't go so far as to say it's a mistake, but here's my experience with the place: management is just average at best, when there is somebody there. No real security (stupid gates and absurd level of patrol), and a bug problem of horrific consequences especially for somewhere corporate-owned charging above-average rents. The facilities (gym and pool) are barely adequate. The "business center" is useless! Don't even try to use it - just go to Kinko's. The laundry is not too bad but overpriced ($1.25 to wash, and $1.10 to dry, which is on top of the high hot water fees you are already paying for, so basically they're double charging you). Also the "unlimited" hot water only runs warm sometimes. The only community BBQ in the place doesn't work so don't expect to use it. The tennis and volleyball courts don't seem worth the bother.
Neighbors: while a few are nice, I've also encountered some real a-holes, with a few too many immature 20 year olds sprinkled in (update: a few of these have been kicked out but a gaggle of girls just moved in beneath me, so the verdict is still out). Others are quite loud and obnoxious with no regard for anyone but themselves. Until recently, I could hear the downstairs savages constantly. Have complained multiple times, and it's improved about 50%.
Heating is OK (not central, but it mostly works) - but the A/C is a joke. Be prepared to use the 2-3 ceiling fans in your place constantly and/or have windows and glass doors open 8-9 months out of the year just to keep the temperature in double digits, especially in upstairs units. Grounds are pretty well tended, but for some unexplained reason there is always a bunch of dirt or water on the sidewalk outside our unit. I've complained once or twice with no real results. Watch out for dog poop too - one of the annoying factors about this place is they let way too many people with dogs move in and take over like they own the place. Hello, get a house and THEN you can have a dog!
Location is convenient - I work about 10-15 minutes away and that's great, but parking stinks! There are SIX accessible spaces outside my building, shared by maybe 10 or 15 people in 3 or 4 buildings. Worse, they raised our lease (despite flat / declining market rates) after 9 months. I was in no mood to go through the search process all over again, so we reluctantly signed up for another 9 mo. for a hefty $75 more a month. The 2nd time they tried (another 6 months) I moved out. Warning: many more suspicious "fees" suddenly appeared when I actually did decide to leave!
They nickel and dime the heck out of you for utilities (trash, water/sewer, electric, etc.) plus charge you for an extra parking space - even though there's really none available especially after 8 or 9pm. A few times I've had to park on the street 1/4 mile away even though I'm PAYING for the additional reserved spot. Two reasons: one, they issued too many extra passes and two, because random losers that don't live here come in the unsecure gates to visit their buddies and take your space half the time (so if you come home after dark you might be screwed). Check elsewhere and you'll probably find something equal or better for less. Like maybe across the street or half a mile down the road.
P.S. If you want a "garport", good luck, there might be one available for an extra $150! Just don't be shocked if some jerk leaves it open and your car is exposed to the seedy street folk or semi-professional thieves/vandals of the early morning hours.
