Adobe is expensive and has it's problems but compared to all my other friends who have lived in multiple complexes in Davis (A Street, Tanglewood, Lexington), it is better than most. The apartment was clean when we moved in and the management actually let us move in early which was nice. The layout of the apartments are great. If you can't stand your roommates you can close your door and have all basic necessities in your room b/c the rooms come equiped with a fridge and microwave at no extra cost. You can sometimes hear your neighbors through the walls but I think that's to be expected no matter what apartment you live in. We lived upstairs so we had carpet and a fireplace which were nice. The rooms and bathrooms are of adequate size and each room has hook ups for TV and phone. The living space and kitchen are good sized too. Adobe is not compatible for DSL, however you are able to get internet through a company called InterQuest. It was just as fast and works the same (you can use your phone while on the internet), if not faster than DSL and worked great. It cost the same amount and I loved it. The customer service was great and I never had any problems with it.
Granted the complex does have parking issues. My roommate was towed for not having her parking placard displayed and my sister had her car towed because she was not parked in a visitor's spot (there are only 5 or so that exist and at night they are generally taken my residents). We lived in a 4 bed/4 bath apartment and each of us had a car, but we were only given 3 spots. (Mind you, 1 of them is a parking spot someone has to pay for). We were lucky enough to get a fourth spot by winning a lottery for spaces given up by apartments who don't need them. Also, spots won through the lottery are also ones you have to pay for, so you better hope you have roommates that don't mind forking over the extra money. However, if you don't get an extra spot you are SOL. I had a covered parking spot @ $25 dollars a month so I didn't have any problems but I know they do exist. My boyfriend would park on the side streets and walk to my place when he would stay and his car got broken into and had his cds and radio stolen so there are some issues in the surrounding neighborhood. I don't know of anyone who had their cars broken into on the grounds though, so if you can get a spot your car is pretty safe. One thing to note however is that parking in Davis, no matter where you live, is always a problem. I think Davis in general lacks adequate parking, so you might as well get used to having to fight for it because no matter where you go, you will have problems.
The carpet gets dirty and stained really easy. It gets black from dirt and the material is pretty cheap. Also, the tile in the kitchen gets really dirty, really fast. The squares in our apartment also came loose several times and had to be replaced. However, it was done promptly and we never had a problem with those tiles again.
Our neighbors were pretty cool. We had 2 really big parties and the cops only came once when we didn't tell them about it. We did go and talk to them afterwards and never had a problem again.
Karen in the main office was professional and understanding to me. I know my roommate didn't like her but I think that was only because she was late on her rent EVERY month. To me, Karen was always attentive and tried to take care of every issue I had, especially maintinence. I had a clogged sink several times and the next day it was fixed.
If you do decide to live in Adobe, buy a TOILET PLUNGER!! YOU WILL DEFINATELY NEED IT! The toilets suck and do not flush, even with nothing in them. You throw a peice of tp in there and they don't flush. They are installed to save water and are a pain in the ass. But, if you don't mind plunging everytime you use them then you're okay. They're manageable but it can be frustrating.
Also, the air conditioning doesn't cool the rooms down at all. We would run our a/c everyday, all day long and our family room and kitchen would we freezing but our bedrooms would be ovens. I bought a fan to get around the issue but it was still a problem, especially during the sweltering months in Davis.
Although I have listed a lot of problems, the apartment was a lot better than most of the ones I have seen in Davis. It was clean, well kept, the managment was attentive, the neighbors were cool, and the layout was good. I know a lot of other places have been dumps when my friends moved into them, the management was horrible, parking was even worse, and they had their cars broken into several times. For what you get, Adobe may be a little pricy by in all, I think it's a good place to live. Living in an apartment in college isn't going to be perfect and every problem that I had with the apartment was manageable. In all, I'd recommend living there.
