Phenomenal Experience

I was fortunate enough to be able to spend two years at Portage Bay after my freshman year at Davis in '03. It's an older complex in West Davis, but it shows very well and the grounds are very nice and well-kept. The manager, Jacque, was extremely professional and helpful throughout my tenancy, and on top of that she's really nice too, genuinely concerned about the quality of life within the complex. She organizes outdoor socials by the pool several times a year, and they're always fun. She also sent me a card at Christmas and after I renewed my lease thanking me for choosing to rent there, a nice personal gesture.

My apartment was a 1-bedroom/1-bath ($815 w/$100 deposit) right across from the manager's office and adjacent to the pool. It was the perfect size for me, good kitchen with TONS of cabinet and storage space, big living room and bedroom, good sized bathroom. There were signs of age (cracks in the walls), but the paint and carpet was new and the whole place was thouroughly cleaned before I moved in. Despite being one of the larger complexes around, noise was never a problem. I could probably count on one hand the number of times that I heard my neighbors through the walls, I found the construction of the apartments themselves to be very solid. I never had trouble with any of my appliances or electrical/plumbing fixtures. And incredibly, I never had ants! There was an occassional spider, but other than that the place was pest-free!

There was always plenty of parking to be had, I could always find parking in one of the lots. Though there's also street parking if that's more convenient. The complex is well-lit at night and I felt it was a very safe/secure place during my two years. The complex is also on the D-Line for Unitrans, with stops at both ends along Lake Avenue, which as a student was great.

Management did some landscaping/grounds work in my second year, and it really made the place look better. They added more lighting and new flowers throughout. It was nice to have a lot of open, bright, green spaces in the complex, and the huge trees were a cool touch. Too bad I had to move out in early Spring for an internship in DC, when everything was coming into bloom...

There's a nice shopping center just up the street from the complex, which has a variety of restaurants, (including Lamppost Pizza and Chuy's Taqueria, two of my favorites in Davis) a small supermarket, a post office and a movie rental store, among other things.

I highly recommend this complex to anyone looking for a quiet, hassle-free complex. When I was trying to find someone to sublease my unit to, Jacque found someone in the complex who needed the space and they were able to take the lease over for the rest of the year! It really took a lot of stress off of me, and was another example of how the management here really looks out for you. I had a great time living here, the only reason I moved out is because I got two roommates for '06-'07 and we needed a bigger place. Otherwise I'd still be in the same spot! I got really lucky having this as my first apartment experience living away from home, I know you'll enjoy it as much as I did!
