I spent a good deal of time researching and checking out apartments in the Dublin area. Avalon Dublin was the clear winner among the places I looked at. Above all, I was most impressed with the office staff. My leasing consultant was very friendly (GENUINELY, friendly, not 'I want your money' friendly).
I read the reviews about the area smelling like dog crap, but I have never smelled anything like that. I do have problems with the air often smelling of cigarettes, but I don't know where you wouldn't have that problem.
As for parking, every apartment gets it's own private 1 car garage. The shared parking is often filled at night time, but this has a lot to do with the fact that some jackasses fill their garage with storage - effectively using up an extra parking spot. Management is addressing it by making regular garage checks to make sure people don't do that anymore.
In my apartment, I almost never hear any noise from my neighbors. Occassionally, I'll hear water running or louder noises (like hammering), but I have never heard music or television or talking coming through any walls at any time.
Overall, the grounds look nice. They aren't perfect, but they do a good job of keeping things fixed and looking nice. The only maintenance problem I had was taken care of within a day or two and the maintenance worker was friendly and quick.
The area is fairly nice and peaceful looking with a good amount of trees. The people I've met have been nice and generally quiet. The complex is located about 5 minutes from the downtown, across from a military reservation, so it's fairly out of the way, but still just 7 minutes away from EVERYthing (including the 580 and 680 freeways). Tons of places nearby to eat and to shop. Also, Big movie theater comlex with restaurants just 1 freeway exit away.
The building was built in the 80's, so it's somewhat old, but it doesn't feel old. My appliances are probably about a decade or so old, but they all look fine, work fine and would be replaced by management if they didn't. (I love the washer and dryer in the unit, too).
Price is a bit high for a 1 bedroom, but I do get a garage, washer/dryer, and a good amount of space.
There's also a pool, hot tub, small sauna, fitness center, business center (with 2 computers / internet / printers), and small basketball and volleyball courts.
Reasons not rent' If you have more than one car, it might be a problem (hopefully they'll be taking care of that). If you like to party all night, neighbors probably won't care too much for you. Price is a little bit steep. I walked into a deal with $1,000 off the first month's rent and only $100 for my deposit.
Everyone I've met on the staff has been very friendly (which was a noticeable difference from everywhere else that I went).
