How to make your escape (if you're unlucky enough to live there...)

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2006
I lived in these apartments about a year and a half ago and was forced to move out early due to the absolutely disgusting condition of my apartment. Not only did the carpets reek of cat urine on the day that I moved in (which they promised to replace, but shockingly enough, never did) but one of the bathrooms was completely unusable due to the broken toilet (also never fixed) and the uninstalled shower curtain rod which tended to come crashing down without warning. I repeatedly contacted the management staff and each time was told that they would "take care of it". After waiting for more then a month (and sending numerous letters and making numerous phone calls). I finally move out due to a rarely used Civil code violation. If you're having as many problems with them as I did, Google "Civil Code 1942". That will show you how to legally break your lease and move out of any disgusting, poorly staffed, unsafe, uninhabitable living environment. Not only did they threaten to take me to court when I first moved out (to which I told them that if anything, I would be taking THEM to court for illegally retaining my security deposit) but they're now coming back (a year and a half later!) to try and collect what I supposedly "owe" them. Just a tip, if they (or any other apartment complex) tries to collect from you and states that you illegally broke your lease, remember that you have rights and that the law states that they, as owners, have obligations to maintain your apartment in a livable state. If you want to move out of this crap-tastic community, then by all means, tell them to get off their asses and fix your ----. Then pack your bags and start looking for a place that doesn't treat it s tenants like garbage.
